Loa development update: reliability, localization and reading experience

Since our Shipaton submission, we have continued improving Loa’s reading experience and production reliability.

Recent work has focused on:

  • Speech playback: improving Android text-to-speech initialization, voice selection and playback recovery, with additional protection around reader lifecycle transitions.
  • Interface and localization: refining the reading controls and localized store screenshots so they represent the app more clearly and consistently.
  • Diagnostics: strengthening Sentry crash diagnostics and release-symbol handling to make production issues easier to investigate.
  • Validation: expanding automated coverage and testing reading and playback flows on a physical Android device.

We have also been reviewing Google Play Console reports to understand discovery and store-listing performance. The available sample is still small, so we are treating these observations as inputs for focused experiments rather than evidence of established growth.

One practical lesson has been that reliable speech playback requires careful coordination between asynchronous callbacks, navigation and Android lifecycle events—not just a working text-to-speech integration.

Loa’s core remains local-first and ad-free, with document reading, listening, notes and bookmarks available without an account. Our next focus is clearer demonstrations and an easier first-reading experience.
