Inspiration The inspiration for Livio came from a shared concern between the founders, Olamide and Obinna, about the alarming rates of poor nutrition in Africa. After meeting at a food event in 2023, they discussed the lack of access to healthy meal options and personalized nutritional guidance. Olamide’s expertise as a food scientist and Obinna’s passion for using technology to address pressing issues converged, motivating them to create a platform that empowers Africans to make healthier food choices.

What it does Livio is a food app designed to help users plan healthy meals, discover new recipes, and achieve their body goals. The app utilizes AI-driven technology to provide personalized meal recommendations based on users’ health goals, preferences, and medical conditions. Livio also connects users to a community of African chefs and nutritionists, offering expert advice, cooking secrets, and real-time support through live sessions and forums.

How we built it Livio was developed collaboratively, starting in June 2024, after Olamide conducted extensive nutrition and meal planning research. Initially, both founders worked part-time while managing their existing businesses. They assembled a technical team, with Obinna leading the coding efforts and eventually hiring additional developers as the project scaled. The founders used agile methodologies to iterate on the app's features, gathering feedback from early users to refine the product.

Challenges we ran into One of the primary challenges faced during development was ensuring that the app accurately reflected the nutritional information of traditional African dishes. Gathering reliable data and creating an engaging user interface that catered to diverse dietary needs proved to be complex. Additionally, transitioning from part-time to full-time work while managing their existing businesses required careful balancing of resources and time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are proud of the successful launch of the Livio app, which has already attracted a growing user base passionate about healthy eating. Building a community of over 20 African chefs and nutritionists to support users has been a significant achievement. We are also pleased with the positive feedback received from users regarding the app's personalised meal-planning features, which address their unique dietary needs.

What we learned Throughout the process, we learned the importance of user feedback in shaping product development. Engaging directly with our target audience helped us identify their pain points and adapt our offerings accordingly. We also recognised the value of collaboration and leveraging each founder's strengths to tackle challenges effectively.

What's next for Livio Looking ahead, Livio plans to expand its offerings by:

  • Increasing partnerships with grocery delivery services and kitchenware merchants to enhance the user experience.
  • Exploring corporate wellness programs and licensing the app to businesses.
  • Introducing new features such as recipe-sharing capabilities and nutritional tracking.
  • Expanding the community by onboarding more chefs and nutritionists to provide users with a wider range of expertise and support.
