Inspiration

LivestockSecure ID was inspired by the humanitarian and economic crisis in Burkina Faso, where armed attacks have led to massive livestock theft and displacement. Recovered animals are often stored without any reliable way to identify their rightful owners, causing injustice, conflict, and long-term loss of livelihoods. This reality motivated us to design a digital solution that restores trust, dignity, and fairness through identity.

What it does

LivestockSecure ID delivers a national digital identity and smart traceability system for livestock. Each animal receives a unique digital identity connected to its owner’s digital ID, physical RFID identifiers, health records, movement history, and ownership history, with a dedicated post-conflict module that enables digital claims, verification, and secure restitution of recovered animals.

How we built it

We designed an interoperable architecture combining RFID-based identification, digital identity infrastructure, secure national databases, web and mobile platforms, offline-first technology for low-connectivity zones, and AI-based analytics for prediction, monitoring, and decision support.

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges related to poor connectivity in rural areas, limited digital literacy, trust in digital systems, institutional coordination, data interoperability, and balancing advanced technology with social and cultural realities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We developed a unified digital identity model that connects animals, owners, institutions, and public services into a single coherent system that supports security, post-conflict recovery, governance, and sustainable livestock management.

What we learned

We learned that digital identity is not just about identification—it is about building trust, enabling justice, strengthening resilience, and creating inclusive digital public infrastructure.

What's next for LivestockSecure ID

Our next steps are to build a functional prototype, launch pilot deployments in post-conflict zones, work with national institutions, train local actors, and progressively scale the system at national and regional levels.
