Inspiration

London traffic is very prominent. Being able to predict the future with live data and forecasted data is powerful for emergency services, insurance companies, roadwork companies, governments, and everyday commuters.

We were also stuck in traffic on the way here when we thought of it.

What it does

Live bus, car, train locations and live camera feeds throughout London. You can switch to a simulation to a particular time or date, or start the simulation from current live data. The simulation starts when you close a train line, particular bus, or close down a road. The people of London and car users will change their commute once one of these changes takes place in the simulation, therefore being able to predict congested areas and economical costs. The map and statistical data describe which roads and areas are most affected and by how much in a certain time frame. This is all done smoothly from a massive map of London. We use live or predicted data of traffic density, traffic speed, traffic flow, and camera feeds to predict the movement and altered commute of cars/Londoners when a service/road is disrupted.

How we built it

  • London map: Built the MapLibre interface and Node.js server.
  • Live buses: Connected TfL data and animated GPS updates.
  • Road network: Converted OpenStreetMap data into drivable roads.
  • Traffic simulation: Seeded shared simulated cars from TomTom data.
  • Map rendering: Added efficient 2D/3D vehicle display.
  • Extra layers: Added traffic, cameras, trains, and controls.
  • Testing: Checked APIs, simulation, overlays, and browser rendering.
