The global issue of climate change is ongoing and continues to demand our attention with its increasing severity. Especially during these COVID-19 times, we notice the effects that man-kind has on its environment and the creators behind littlesteps hoped to create an app that reminds people of the small things we can do daily to decrease our carbon footprints and make positive change in our environment.
What it does
littlesteps is a mobile app that provides a simple guide to reducing carbon footprint. In the home page, the app determines the number of kilograms of CO2 emissions saved depending on the alternative choices made during the day, and displays the data on a bar chart containing progress during the past week. There are also constant reminders of ways to live 'greener' as well as auto-generated reminders that change every time the app is opened. Additionally, there are pre-written facts about climate change displayed at the bottom of the home screen that alternate every time the app is opened. From the home page, users can access a daily log page where they can save the decisions they have made on a specific day.
How we built it
We built the frontend in React-Native and backend in Python/Flask.
Challenges we ran into
As this was the first remote hackathon for most of us, collaborating remotely was a challenge; We had to adjust to using Discord as our primary communication space. Another challenge was going from app design/mockups to an actual app implementation; Often we ran into implementation issues and had to make tough decisions on what compromises to make.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of the visual design of our app.
What we learned
We learned about the various challenges in translating our app designs into actual implementation.
What's next for Little Steps
User authentication and social media integration.
