Inspiration

Our inspiration is helping reduce the impact of food insecurity for college students. Through this project, we realized the Ram Pantry helps students and the greater Richmond community, which makes the impact of this analysis much more significant.

What it does

This project analyzes files of data provided by sensors attached to the Ram Pantries. These sensors collected Date, Time, and Status (DOOR-OPEN or DOOR-CLOSED) information.

How we built it

We combined these spreadsheets together and filtered the data using SQL, and then performed analyses using Python. We used Deepnote to collaborate on our code and build our dashboard.

Challenges we ran into

Data needed to be cleaned manually before it could be combined. When building the heatmap, we had to make our own shapefile using Google Maps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The heatmap is interactive and provides an easily accessible overview of the highlights of our information. We also broke down usage by semester, by location, by day of the week, by the year overall, and more! So we're very happy with the extent that we were able to break the information down.

What we learned

We learned how to make our own shapefile. We also learned how to use Deepnote .

What's next for Little Ram Pantry Analysis

Next, we want to improve the extent of data that is collected in order to better assess usage patterns. For example, having a camera that points inside of the Pantry would preserve user privacy while allowing us to evaluate how many times people donate vs. take food, what food items are taken the most, etc. In terms of our dashboard, we want to add more user interactivity. For example, we have the busy hours for every pantry, and we want to allow users to select a location they want to visit and they can view that locations hours, rather than having all busy hours visible in a list the way we do now.

We provided a link to our video on Kultura which should be higher quality than the video on YouTube.
