Social media allows individuals to be involved current issues on a grand scheme. Recently on twitter there was a #trashbag challenge, in which individuals found areas that were filled with rubbish and posted a before and after picture of them after cleaning. This movement encouraged more people to get involved in cleaning our planet. Sometimes we think tossing one piece of litter doesn’t make a difference, but if we all have this mindset the impact is substantial. These negative acts and mindset increase our carbon emissions, and negatively impact the our planet's ecosystems. That is why we created little green foot. We want to encourage people to make small changes in their lives that will make huge changes in the lives to come.
What it does
The app tracks the several ways people can reduce their carbon footprint. The more things you do, the more points you get. You can challenge your friends to see who is helping the world or you can compare globally. This app is suppose to motivate people in improving their carbon footprint by doing tiny acts.
How we built it
The back end portion was developed using python in a Visual Studios IDE. Much of the data was sorted/ stored using dictionaries. Dictionaries were used for the mock login setting, and for keeping track of how many times an action occurred by making that action the key, and the number of times it was accessed the value air that key.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge that didn’t get fixed was multi user information. Although it is known to be possible, we simply prioritized it less due to wanting to be able to demonstrate at least a working function for one user. There were also some communication disconnects between the front end development team and the back end on what needed to be displayed/accessed
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first app that we created together and for some of us, just in general. We had some naps between us and took shifts ,but most of us barely slept. We came together and created an idea that we got more excited about the more we talked about it. Through compromises and sometimes clashes we did it because we all genuinely had a passion for this project. So we worked through the hardships and tiredness. It gave us more confidence in our abilities overall. We’re proud we took this opportunity to join this hackathon and to see our idea come into fruition.
What we learned
We learned alot about global warming and the little ways we can reduce carbon emissions and also about the path the earth is following. This opened our eyes to the importance of saving the earth for future generations
What's next for Little Green Foot
-conduct further research -test the application with selected groups, and based on the results from these tests eventually -develop the mobile application -partner with eco friendly companies to spread the word: like IBM
