✨ Literatus: AI-powered reading for the future of education
🌱 Inspiration
In Chile, thousands of children and teenagers are growing up without understanding what they read. Reading comprehension scores are among the lowest in Latin America. This crisis affects their ability to write emails, express themselves, build arguments, and participate meaningfully in society.
We were inspired by the urgent need to rescue reading as a core human skill—not just decoding text, but thinking critically, emotionally, and creatively. "Literatus" was born to turn reading into a vibrant, interactive, and personalized adventure.
💡 What it does
"Literatus" is a web-based platform that combines AI, gamification, and storytelling to help children and teens develop strong reading comprehension skills. Here's what it enables students to do:
- Talk to the characters in the book using animated avatars powered by AI.
- Have conversations with the author and ask them about the story.
- Invent new paragraphs and even insert themselves into the plot.
- Follow the proven pedagogical method SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review).
- Generate and answer comprehension questions.
- Receive real-time feedback and guidance from the AI.
The result: a living book experience, where students become co-creators, not just passive readers.
🛠️ How we built it
"Literatus" is being developed using:
- React: for the frontend interface
- Django: for the backend logic
- Bolt.new: for rapid development and deployment of modular components
- Generative AI models (Gemini) for real-time dialogue, question generation, and narrative expansion
- Animated avatar technology to give life to characters and authors
- Speech-to-text and text-to-speech integration for interactive conversation, using Eleven Labs and Amazon Polly.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
- Designing a meaningful, age-appropriate interaction model with AI characters.
- Ensuring pedagogical coherence and aligning with national curriculum goals.
- Creating dynamic content that adapts to different reading levels and interests.
- Developing avatars and voice interaction that feel natural, not robotic.
- Balancing creative freedom with structured educational guidance.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a system that not only teaches reading but lets students live the story.
- Designing a tool that can scale across different schools and reading levels.
- Generating excitement among educators, children, and stakeholders in Chile’s public education system.
📚 What we learned
- Children are eager to read—if we give them a reason to care.
- Interactivity and personalization are key drivers of engagement in educational platforms.
- AI can empower learners, but must be thoughtfully guided by pedagogy.
- The future of education lies not just in access to technology, but in how we use it to build meaning and connection.
🚀 What's next for Literatus
- Launching a pilot program in Chilean public schools during the second semester of 2025.
- Collecting qualitative and quantitative data on comprehension, motivation, and usage.
- Expanding the platform to include books in science, history, and civic education.
- Partnering with teachers and institutions to co-create content and customize experiences.
- Seeking support from education ministries, research centers, and literacy-focused NGOs to scale the impact.
"Literatus" is more than a reading tool—it's a call to action to rethink how we teach, how we read, and how we prepare the next generation to lead!
