Inspiration

We brainstormed and came up with two ideas to play with, lights out in a room and you are walking around with a torch that shows pass-through and interactive audio, in that touching real objects in your space would emit sounds. We worked through an ideation refinement and managed to combine the two into a dark world where you must navigate by looking through your hands.

We wanted dreamy sounds and absurd visuals.

What it does/how to play

  • Use a Meta Quest 3 (recommended) or Meta Quest 2.
  • Set up your surroundings for mixed reality and make sure passthrough is enabled.
  • Make sure your scanned area is within your boundary area.
  • Use your hands (not controllers) for interactions with the virtual objects.
  • Touch the flowers around the room to make them open and light up.
  • Open all the flowers to hear the full audio loop.

How we built it

We went through a tutorial about creating a flashlight to show a small passthrough window that could move. Then we added that to the hand interaction and on the mesh. Used a spawner and the effect mesh to spawn flowers on different objects in the space setup. When the hands collide with the flower objects, they animate to open and a looping sound begins to play. Each flower opening adds another audio loop so that when all are opened it plays a complete track of synthesised sounds.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into issues with the the playable boundary and room setup. The flowers were spawning out of reach. We need to fix this asap so that players can finish the level.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The experienced graphic designer on the team creating fantastic and professional marketing assets for the logo and loading screen. Another team member created the audio from scratch.

What we learned

Even on small projects or hackathons, creating a storyboard is key for ensuring everyone collaborates and agrees on the concept. Buying into a collective fantasy creates team harmony.

What's next for LIT

Bug fixing for spawning location of flowers. Creating a win state.
