Inspiration

We wanted to build an app around self-care and organizing for students (particularly high school and college students). Some of our team members and their friends de-stress via lists, so we thought of creating a chill app that rewards you with visually soothing plants (plant parents are popular on college campuses as plants are known to reduce stress).

What it does

Users create a list of their to-dos, and the first of every ten to-dos will bring about a baby plant. As more and more tasks get checked off (and stored in the “soil”), the plant grows. After ten completed tasks, the plant becomes a beautiful, healthy adult, and gets moved to the background as another baby plant takes its place. When the background gets too full of plants (signifying great progress~), the user can choose to clear their background or reset aka start over.

How we built it

We used Android Studio for front-end design. App icon got created with ibisPaintX. And the back-end got developed with Wing 101 software in Python.

Challenges we ran into

Only one member was experienced with Android Studio, so the rest of the team briefly got their feet wet with the said studio. The app did not need to be fully implemented, but some working back-end was necessary, so Alex and Yang wrote a pseudo-code in Python. We also did not know how to sync our front and back-end. With more time and experience, this would be resolved.

Accomplishments we're proud of

We think our idea is great, and with further work, this app can be really beneficial for students around the world!

What we learned

We collectively learned about Android Studio, and even though teamwork was made more difficult in a virtual environment, we pushed through and created this awesome project!

What's next for List and Plants

Our back-end program was not fully implemented, because we realized we needed graphic software like Xming which will recognize when the user clicks on the app buttons. We also concluded that additional screens like an instruction/welcome page needs to be built to make this app very user friendly.
