LIQAMBE, meaning “Name it”, is a groundbreaking initiative that bridges language preservation, artificial intelligence (AI), and community empowerment. This project is rooted in the belief that language is not merely a tool for communication but a fundamental right, one that should be accessible to all, regardless of linguistic or geographical barriers. By leveraging AI and community collaboration, LIQAMBE seeks to reclaim Africa’s technological future by ensuring that indigenous languages, starting with isiZulu, are integrated into the digital landscape.

Across Africa, from Cape Town to Cairo, there is a growing movement to develop AI solutions that reflect local languages, data, and worldviews. For too long, African communities, particularly those in rural areas or non-English-speaking populations, have been excluded from technological advancements. Each innovation introduces new English terminology, leaving many isiZulu-speaking South Africans unable to engage with these developments in their own language.

Recognizing this gap, LIQAMBE was born. Starting with isiZulu, this project aims to create a sustainable model for linguistic inclusion, ensuring that African languages thrive in the digital age.

LIQAMBE is an AI-driven system designed to detect, translate, and preserve technological terminology in isiZulu. Its core functions include:

Scanning digital documents (tech articles, research papers, websites) for new or unfamiliar English tech terms. Cross-referencing these words against an expanding isiZulu dictionary database. Flagging untranslated terms and sending them to a “New Words” section for community review and AI analysis.

Once a new word is identified:

OpenAI GPT-4 breaks down the term’s root meaning, origin, and cultural context. AI suggests isiZulu translations based on linguistic logic and grammar. The Lexicon Builder stores approved or community-voted translations for future reference.

LIQAMBE introduces the first AI-powered, community-driven dictionary for isiZulu tech terminology, offering: Public Access (Free) View newly suggested isiZulu translations. Vote on preferred translations. A video explaining simplified words and the AI breakdown process.

Premium Features (Private Side) Audio pronunciations of tech terms. Full translation history, grammar notes, and linguistic breakdowns. Tools for educators, translators, and developers to integrate these terms into apps and curricula

To bring LIQAMBE to life, the project utilizes:

Frontend: React.js

Backend & Hosting: Firebase (Firestore, Authentication, Hosting)

AI & NLP Tools: OpenAI GPT-4 (word analysis and translation suggestions) spaCy & NLTK (natural language processing pipelines) Lexicon Builder (word storage and metadata management) Firebase Functions (automated scanning and logic) ElasticSearch (real-time dictionary search) Deployment: Vercel

Building LIQAMBE presented several hurdles, including:

Integrating multiple AI and database systems seamlessly. Limited isiZulu training data for machine learning models. The scarcity of technical content in isiZulu makes accurate translations difficult. Balancing linguistic authenticity with modernization to ensure cultural relevance. Despite these challenges, the team developed innovative solutions, such as crowdsourcing translations and refining AI models with community input.

Key accomplishments include:

A fully functional system that detects, translates, and stores new tech terms. Successful collaboration between developers, linguists, and creatives. Laying the foundation for future language expansions beyond isiZulu.

Throughout this journey, the team gained invaluable insights, such as:

How to construct and manage a Lexicon Builder. The role of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in language innovation. Techniques for training AI models with limited datasets. The power of community-driven development in preserving languages.

LIQAMBE’s roadmap includes:

Full platform deployment for public use. Legal recognition through partnerships with PanSALB, universities, and lexicography units. Sustainable monetization via premium plans and institutional collaborations. Expansion to other South African languages after stabilizing isiZulu. Public awareness campaigns and educational partnerships. Mobile app development to reach rural and urban users alike.

Language is a right, not a privilege. LIQAMBE stands as a testament to the power of technology in preserving cultural identity and ensuring no one is left behind in the digital revolution.
