InspirationReading is a hobby that all of our team members love. However, reading takes up many of the fine motor skills that many individuals struggle with. According to the Government of Canada, during 2022, 1.5 million Canadians ages 15 or over experience some form of dexterity disability (1). On top of this, according to Ability Central, about 50% of people over 70 struggle with tasks that require manual dexterity (2). Due to the large population of individuals that struggle with manual dexterity issues, and considering that about 38.5% of people over 65 read for pleasure while 9.4% of individuals between 15-24 read for pleasure, there are many individuals who lose out on one of their favorite hobbies simply due to a physical disability (3). With our product, many people with dexterity skills affected will still be able to experience their favorite hobby without the need to use their fingers to do so.

What it does

As mentioned in the design processing page, people who love to read but have limited hand mobility or chronic pain issues such as arthritis, cerebral palsy, or fractured hands/joints are unable to enjoy the hobby due to the fine motor skills of flipping the page. By using this adjustable book page flipper and adjustable stand, users will be able to flip the page without the need to touch the book by passing their hand over the motion sensor button. The book ledge will hold the book up, while the page flipper and page holder will simultaneously work together to keep the book held down and change the page when needed. The hinge will move forward and out of the way when the page is flipped, while the book flipper will rotate paper thin plastic pieces under each page to help as it flips.
