Inspiration

I wanted to create a game, and Unity seemed like a popular game engine for developing games. I'm formerly a traditional Chinese lion (and dragon!) dancer and thought it'd be fun melding my passion for this form of art with my interest in developing games for this hackathon.

More about the holiday — Chinese new year is the most important holiday celebrated in China that starts with the new moon on the lunar calendar and symbolically represents sweeping away the old of the previous year and beginning anew for health, prosperity, and good fortune in the new lunar year. Lion dancing continues to be an important tradition during the holiday, and you'll know it's happening when you hear the furious beating of drums, clashing cymbals, and resounding gongs in the streets of Chinatown.

What it does

As the drummer, press keys on keyboard at certain beats to simulate beating the Chinese drum in different places and make music.

How I built it

I built it with Unity and C#.

Challenges I ran into

This was my first time using Unity and coding in C#!

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I created my first game in Unity that I can share with friends.

What I learned

I learned that even a 2D game in Unity has its steep learning curve. Where the sprites are on my screen are not where they are in the game, a lot of the time -- still figuring this out!

What's next for Lion Dance Drumming Revolution

Another game! More levels! Accurate tunes!
