I've always loved word puzzles, but I noticed something disheartening—our mother languages, Shona and Ndebele, are slowly fading as more people prioritise English. Beyond schools, very few platforms actively promote these languages in an engaging and accessible way. This realisation inspired me to create LinguoQuest, a game that allows players to enjoy word puzzles while learning and appreciating Shona, Ndebele, and English. I wanted a fun, interactive way to connect people with their roots and encourage language preservation.

Building LinguoQuest was an incredible learning journey. I delved deeper into game development, improving my coding and problem-solving skills. I also used this project to learn about cloud technologies, exploring ways to integrate cloud-based services for data storage and progress tracking. This experience has deepened my technical knowledge and given me a greater appreciation for the complexities of designing a multilingual platform.

The project began with researching word puzzles and the mechanics behind engaging gameplay. I then designed the game to support three languages, allowing players to pick their preferred language and switch levels seamlessly. I used modern tools and frameworks for the development and cloud-based solutions for managing user data and progress. A key part of the process was ensuring the game was educational and entertaining, with hints that challenge players to think critically.

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Creating a smooth experience for switching levels and managing progress in multiple languages required extra effort in logic design and testing. Additionally, balancing the need for fun gameplay with meaningful learning outcomes was a constant consideration. Another challenge was learning cloud skills on the go and integrating them effectively into the project. Lastly, let’s not forget the financial motivation—I was driven by the goal of winning prize money to support further development of this idea and grow the platform.

LinguoQuest is more than just a game; it’s a mission to revive and celebrate our mother languages while providing an engaging platform for people to challenge themselves and learn. The project reflects my love for word puzzles, my desire to preserve our cultural heritage, and my personal and technical growth journey. And, of course, the chance to win the prize money is a big bonus that keeps me motivated!
