LINGUO

Inspiration

Linguo was inspired by the cultural and linguistic diversity at our university and the everyday need to write better and communicate clearly. We noticed that students often switch between languages and struggle with grammar, clarity, or even crafting the right prompts for AI tools. Linguo solves this by bringing translation, text correction, summarization, and smart writing assistance into one private browser workspace , making communication and creativity seamless.

What it does

Linguo is a private, browser-based AI workspace that helps users write, translate, summarize, and proofread text , all locally on their device. Unlike cloud-based tools, Linguo uses Chrome’s built-in AI models, ensuring data never leaves the browser. It unifies writing and communication tools in one place, giving users speed, transparency, and privacy while improving their productivity and fluency across multiple languages.

How we built it

We built Linguo using Next.js, React, and TypeScript, with styling powered by Tailwind CSS for a clean and responsive UI. It runs entirely client-side, leveraging Chrome’s Built-in AI for text processing ,including proofreading, translation, summarization, rewriting, and content generation. We integrated Mammoth for .docx parsing and PDF.js for PDF imports. All AI operations happen locally, ensuring zero backend dependencies, complete data privacy, and fast execution.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was ensuring that all AI operations remained fully client-side without compromising performance. Integrating Chrome’s local AI capabilities with a smooth, responsive interface required careful optimization. We also faced difficulties maintaining text formatting during document imports and balancing simplicity with the depth of tools offered , all while keeping privacy intact.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of successfully creating a fully local AI writing workspace that requires no cloud processing or user data storage. Linguo demonstrates that privacy and performance can coexist in AI tools. We also achieved seamless integration of multiple writing functions ; proofreading, translating, summarizing, and rewriting , into a single intuitive platform accessible to students, professionals, and creators alike.

What we learned

We learned how powerful on-device AI can be when properly optimized. Building Linguo taught us to prioritize privacy and accessibility without sacrificing usability. We also deepened our understanding of Chrome’s built-in AI framework and the importance of designing tools that empower users to stay in control of their data while enhancing creativity and communication.

What's next for LINGUO

Next, we plan to add inline reasoning displays, smart language detection, and auto-translation pipelines for smoother multilingual interaction. We also aim to introduce multimodal support (images and audio), cross-device continuity, and an optional cloud mode for resource-intensive tasks. Our goal is to make Linguo a universal, privacy-first writing companion that redefines how people interact with text across the web.
