LinguaLive

Inspiration

As a language educator for over 20 years, I've seen that one of the biggest challenges learners face is getting enough practice and building confidence. Many students understand vocabulary and grammar but rarely have the opportunity to practice real conversations in a safe, supportive environment.

LinguaLive was inspired by the idea of giving every learner an intelligent conversation partner that complements language courses rather than replacing them.

What it does

LinguaLive is an AI-powered language companion that guides beginners through short, realistic conversations. Instead of traditional drills, learners practice speaking in everyday situations such as meeting someone for the first time or ordering at a café.

For this prototype, learners choose a scenario and have a live conversation in French with Claire, an AI conversation partner. Claire stays in character, encourages the learner, gently corrects mistakes, and ends each session with a short review of useful expressions and pronunciation tips.

How I built it

I built LinguaLive using HeyGen Live Avatar together with OpenAI Codex to create the web application and conversational workflow. The project combines conversational AI with instructional design principles developed through years of language teaching.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was designing an experience that felt like a natural conversation instead of another AI chatbot. Rather than overwhelming learners with grammar explanations, I focused on creating short, realistic role-play scenarios that build confidence through practice. Also, the chatbot still isn't speaking like a native French speaker. I don't have enough credits with Heygen or Codex to fix it.

Another challenge was building a working prototype within the limited timeframe of OpenAI Build Week while learning new AI development tools.

What I learned

This project reinforced how AI can support education by creating interactive learning experiences instead of simply generating answers. I also see the enormous potential for conversational AI and live avatars working together to make language learning more engaging and accessible.

What's next

Future versions of LinguaLive will have realistic backgrounds suited to the context, support multiple languages, include additional conversation scenarios, provide progress tracking, vocabulary review, and integration with structured language courses, allowing learners to move seamlessly from guided lessons into real conversational practice.
