Inspiration
Communication is the foundation of inclusion — yet millions of people are left out because of language differences, low literacy, or disabilities. I wanted to build something that lets everyone express themselves and be understood.
The inspiration came when I saw how refugees, immigrants, and people with hearing or literacy challenges often struggle to access education, healthcare, or even basic digital tools. Existing translation apps focus on words — LinguaLink focuses on understanding and inclusivity.
My goal was simple but powerful: create a universal communication bridge that adapts to each person’s needs, whether that means real-time sign language, simplified text, or multilingual voice support.
What it does
LinguaLink is an AI-powered communication platform that transforms how people interact across barriers of language and ability. It can: 1.Convert speech to text in real time. 2.Simplify complex language into easy-to-read summaries. 3.Translate text into sign language animations using a 3D avatar placeholder. 4.Convert text back into natural, expressive voices in multiple languages. 5.Let users customize their experience with accessibility settings (text size, color modes, preferred language, easy mode). 6.Chatbot included to help users with any question they may have or help them explore more within the website. Whether it’s a doctor and patient, a teacher and student, or a citizen and government officer, LinguaLink ensures both sides can communicate smoothly and inclusively.
How we built it
I designed and prototyped LinguaLink using: Figma → to create a fully interactive prototype with accessible UI components and smooth navigation. GitHub → for version control, structure, and code repository management. Snowflake API → to handle natural language understanding, summarization, and simplified text generation. The prototype simulates full functionality, including speech-to-text, simplification, and sign avatar translation workflows.
Challenges we ran into
Time limitation as a solo hacker — managing both design, API logic, and user flow.
Integrating accessibility and inclusivity features while keeping the interface clean and non-overwhelming. Designing realistic sign language translation flows — most APIs don’t yet support multilingual signing. Ensuring the UI met accessibility standards (contrast, size, readability) across all screens. These challenges helped shape LinguaLink into something that feels genuinely inclusive, not just another translation app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully interactive, accessible prototype solo within the hackathon timeframe. Created a design that feels functional and ready for real-world use, not just a concept. Used AI responsibly to empower marginalized users, not replace them. Developed a clear, scalable idea that can grow into a real platform bridging communication gaps globally.
What we learned
How to combine AI APIs, accessibility design, and UX flow into one cohesive product. The importance of inclusive design principles — making technology usable for all ability levels. How to manage product thinking end-to-end: from concept → research → Figma prototype → API planning. Learned about multimodal communication systems (voice, text, visual) and how they intersect with accessibility tech.
What's next for LinguaLink
Integrate real-time sign language translation using 3D avatars (ASL and ISL). Add multilingual support with Google Translate and Whisper for broader inclusivity. Build a mobile version (PWA) for offline-first communication in rural areas. Partner with NGOs and education platforms to deploy LinguaLink where it’s needed most. Open-source the project to invite global collaboration on inclusive AI development.
