Inspiration

Traveling to new places is exciting—but it can also be overwhelming when you don’t speak the language, can’t read a sign, or don’t know who to ask for help. We built LinguaLift to bridge this gap using AI — so travelers can focus on the experience, not the struggle. Whether it’s reading a menu, asking for directions, or discovering local spots — LinguaLift speaks for you.

What It Does

LinguaLift is a smart, multimodal travel assistant that helps users:

  • Translate text, voice, and image-based content instantly
  • Get smart tourist recommendations using Azure OpenAI
  • Interact with accessible and location-aware travel tools
  • Navigate language barriers with confidence and empathy

How We Built It

We built LinguaLift using:

  • Azure Cognitive Services for speech, translation, and computer vision
  • Azure OpenAI (GPT-35-Turbo) to generate tourist suggestions
  • HTML/CSS/JS frontend hosted on Azure Static Web Apps
  • Seamless UI for real-time inputs: text, voice, and image
  • Content Safety layer to ensure responsible and inclusive output

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Getting OCR to work reliably on stylized text (solved using Azure Read API)
  • Managing CORS and API key security from the frontend
  • Parsing GPT output dynamically across multiple languages
  • Designing a unified user experience for multiple input modes

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Delivered a fully working multimodal translator in one interface
  • Integrated GPT to make tourism suggestions feel human and local
  • Created a solution that's language-inclusive, intuitive, and accessible
  • Designed for real-world friction: street signs, menus, lost-in-translation moments

What We Learned

  • How to combine multiple Azure services into one seamless product
  • The importance of empathetic UX in language and accessibility tools
  • How to build responsibly with AI and content safety in mind
  • Real-world testing is crucial — menus and signage are not always clean text!

What's Next for LINGUALIFT

  • Add offline support and local caching for travelers with poor connectivity
  • Enable speech output for full conversational assistance
  • Launch a mobile app version with geolocation + camera integration
  • Partner with travel companies to offer embedded LinguaLift experiences
