Inspiration

We were inspired to prototype LinguaFriends because our whole team is from different parts of the world. This hackathon being international as well also inspired us to create LinguaFriends. The discussions of our different backgrounds prompted us to create an app that allows individuals of diverse backgrounds to come together to build upon their similar interests of language learning. We believe that the best way for people from different countries to connect is through language.

What it does

LinguaFriends is an app meant for individuals to practice and learn languages with one another. Users can filter through profiles and choose who to chat with from all over the world. Within the chat rooms, you can communicate one on one with a native/fluent speaker. You can translate all messages instantly and there is a feature that generates random prompts in case you are not sure what to discuss. You also have the option to send voice messages so that you can practice your pronunciation. All profiles are screened and verified to ensure safety. There are designated teachers and students within the app. Teachers go through an interview process where they submit an audio recording of them speaking the language to guarantee their fluency. Additionally, swear words and any derogatory language will be filtered out of all chat rooms. Furthermore, there is a game tab with a variety of games that allow you to practice that language while having fun. Users are also able to send the games among themselves. There is a translator within the app that allows you to translate anything directly. Other users can leave comments about their experience with you. You can access all the notifications you receive, both old and new unless deleted. LinguaFriends is a nonprofit. It offers volunteer hours to the teachers if they wish to receive them.

How we built it

We built the prototype of LingaFriends entirely on Figma.

Challenges we ran into

We are a team with people from different time zones so scheduling meetings became a bit complicated, but we managed to communicate really well by reminding each other all the time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the designs that we have. Our LinguaFriends app is both colorful in design and equipped with various useful functions that make it stand out among our competitors. We also really liked the purpose of our app. LinguaFriends has three main functions: one, a learning platform for users to practice languages; two, a socializing platform for users to connect with people all over the world; and three, a volunteer platform for middle schoolers and highschoolers to gain volunteer experience.

What we learned

We learned more about Figma, specifically Figma animations and the different plugins that are offered. We also sharpened our communication and collaboration skills a lot!

What's next for Lingua Friends

Our next step is coding the app based on our Figma design. We will also market our app to ensure that all users have the opportunity to either learn/practice the language.
