Inspiration

As first-generation children who never got to learn their own Native language, some of us have a language barrier between our family members from interacting often. The use of LingoCaptions will allow us to build a closer relationship with other family members, through common sources of entertainment. Our team is made up of two first-gen Asian Americans and International students, so we experience these struggles on a daily basis. We've always wanted to explore different movies within different languages but our language barrier prohibited us from doing so.

What it does

A captioning application that facilitates language learning by overcoming communication barriers through the use of a real-time translator of internal computer audio.

How we built it

With the help of Microsoft's Azure Translator API, we were able to retrieve our source input's audio and translate it into a language that we needed. The application was built by using Python and Tkinter, a GUI.

Challenges we ran into

Some of us are relatively new to Computer Science, so learning a completely different language and framework, along with a new API, for the project displayed a troublesome obstacle. We often ran compatible issues with our packages.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Going as far as we did with our project within the given time frame.

What we learned

We had learned how to be proficient with Python's framework, along with how to implement a GUI (Tkinter) into it, as well as learn different components with the Azure Translator.

What's next for LingoCaptions

We hope that LingoCaptions could be used more globally. There are some things would want to change, such as our UI design, as we currently have a fixed frame that needs a scroll. In addition, we would want to broaden and test more languages, as well as provide more support to their romanticization.
