I was inspired by the realization that family stories, life lessons, and even the sound of a loved one's voice can disappear forever just in a instant. Many families wish they had asked more questions or recorded more memories before it was too late. After coming up with this idea while brainstorming I found that I wanted to create a solution that not only preserves memories, but also preserves the wisdom, values, and experiences behind them. My goal for this app was to capture stories, and create a legacy for future generations.

What does Lineage do? Lineage is an AI-powered family legacy platform that helps users preserve stories, voices, and memories. Instead of asking users ( primarily seniors ) to write their life stories from scratch, Lineage acts as an AI interviewer, asking thoughtful questions and generating personalized follow-ups based on the prerequisite response.

Lineage is a single-file HTML, CSS, and JavaScript application powered by the Claude API (claude-sonnet-4-6). I used Claude for every AI feature: dynamic interview question generation, intelligent follow-up logic, transcript polishing into narrative prose, wisdom extraction across four categories, memory gap analysis, photo captioning, and Legacy Letter generation. The user's archive of every memory, photo, comment, and family question is stored locally in the browser.

Designing an AI interview that felt warm rather than robotic was the hardest part. Generic AI prompts produced generic answers. I solved this by prompting Claude to ask specific, sensory questions about smells, places, hands, and weather instead of broad ones like "tell me about your childhood." I also had to balance polishing answers into clean prose without flattening the storyteller's voice, and design a Family Connections experience that worked equally well for an elderly storyteller and a younger family member visiting the same screen.

An accomplishment is that Lineage is a memory app that closes the loop between storyteller and listener, where a grandchild's question becomes a grandmother's interview prompt. The Untold Stories chapter map is an original way of framing memory preservation as a life-completeness problem instead of just a memory count. The Wisdom Book turns raw stories into structured values, lessons, and traditions that survive beyond the archive itself. And the entire experience runs in a single HTML file with zero setup, zero accounts, and zero subscription cost — making it genuinely accessible to the people who need it most.

Building Lineage taught me that the hardest part of an AI project isn't the technology it's the design decisions. Every time I added a feature, I had to ask whether it actually helped the people I built this for, or whether I was just adding it because I could. I learned that real social impact doesn't come from doing more it comes from removing barriers.

What's next for Lineage is, Multilingual interview support so storytellers can record in their native language. Voice playback so the Family Wisdom Book can be heard, not just read. A shared family archive mode so multiple relatives can contribute to the same Timeline. And partnerships with senior care centers and family history organizations to bring Lineage to the elderly communities who would benefit from it most.
