Inspiration
While playing around with ChatGPT Image 2, i realised it is actually pretty good at turning a photo of a real person into cute little stickers that look just like them. After that, i thought that it would be really nice if you could create stickers with your partner doing funny stuff together, and even add your pet in the mix. That's how "lil guys" and "lil couple" came to life - two separate apps - one meant for single person stickers, the other meant for duos.
What it does
It allows the user to upload a picture of themselves and a loved one, as well as (optionally) a pet. User picks a style (chibbi, anime, etc.), 16 emotions from a bigger list, and then the app generates a 16-sticker pack with cute stickers in different funny/loveable/cute poses that they can export directly as a native sticker pack for WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage (via App Extension), as well as zip with 16-stickers PNG and share as 16 separate PNG's via Apple's share functionality.
How we built it
Heavily relying on Claude Code, and using ChatGPT Image 2 for image generation, but also including our vast UI/UX and coding experience to deliver a polished, good looking, robust mobile app. We also have our own backend for it.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was getting the ChatGPT Image 2 to generate consistent, high quality results at a good cost. We adapted our prompts and algorithm to be able to generate the whole 16 sticker pack using only two ChatGPT image generations and some image processing for cutting the sprite-sheet and eliminating backgrounds.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A high quality onboarding experience, and smooth app navigation with 0 friction for the user. A very small failure rate among sticker pack generations allowing us to confidently offer good sticker packs for our users. Localization done in English, Spanish and Japanese, with emphasis on "Anime" stickers style for the Japanese version, both in the localized app store screenshots and the website, as well as for the in-app mascot shown during onboarding.
What we learned
We learned a lot about working with ChatGPT API, how to create prompts for consistent results, but also how to make our costs efficient. On top of that, we also had a lot of fun learning how to process the images generated by chatGPT to offer a good result for our users.
What's next for lil couple
Our current "emotions" that the user can pick can be expanded into a lot of categories. We could also have content creators create "custom" packs with specific emotions described by them, that their followers could create. We can also add extra subscription gated features, like themed sticker packs, the ability to add in your baby or child, the option to customize/stylize your stickers (add outlines, etc.), the abilty to export stickers to other platforms.
