Inspiration
We see hundreds of people online who share our interests, but still struggle to find people to actually do things with in real life. Social media tells us what people like, but it rarely helps turn those shared interests into real-world experiences. We wanted to bridge that gap. Likely was inspired by the idea that your online interests can be a surprisingly good starting point for finding your people offline.
What it does
Likely connects you with people who like what you like - and gives you a reason to meet IRL. Users can optionally connect their Instagram activity so Likely can understand their interests from the content they engage with. It then uses those interests to help discover people with similar tastes and suggest relevant group activities.
✨ Discover people with shared interests 🎉 Host a group activity 🧭 Discover and join activities 📍 Find affordable activities in public places 👥 Connect through small groups 🎯 Add fun challenges to make activities more interactive 📸 Create memories from experiences they complete together
How we built it
We built Likely as a web application with a focus on making the experience simple, playful, and fast. The prototype combines interest-based personalization, activity discovery, group event creation, joining flows, public-location safety features, interactive challenges, and memory creation into one experience. We used modern web technologies and AI-assisted development to rapidly prototype and iterate on the product during the Code to Connect hackathon.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was to understand someone's interests without making onboarding feel like filling out a questionnaire. We also had to think carefully about safety. Since Likely encourages people to meet offline, we designed the experience around small groups and public locations rather than one-on-one stranger meetups. Since, I'm new to building projects like these it took me a while to understand basics of the projects functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we turned a simple observation about social media into a product that encourages people to put their phones down and actually do something together.
What we learned
We learned that solving loneliness doesn't necessarily mean creating another social network. Sometimes, the better solution is to use technology to help people spend less time on it.
What's next for Likely ✨
We'd like to expand local activity discovery, accessibility filters, proper functionality, group safety features, richer challenges, and shared memory creation. Ultimately, we want Likely to become the place you go when you think: “I want to do something fun. Who's into the same things I am?”
