Inspiration

LightScroll began with a simple observation: most screen-time apps treat behavior change like a single-player game. You set limits and track streaks, but when there are no real consequences for breaking them, it's all too easy to ignore the limit and keep scrolling.

The idea came from two friends frustrated by the addictive nature of modern apps and disappointed by existing screen-time tools. We found ourselves creating informal accountability systems over WhatsApp to help each other stay on track. That led to a simple question: what if screen-time apps were built around social accountability instead of willpower alone - and felt like beautifully crafted products instead of utilities you dreaded opening?

What it does

LightScroll turns healthier screen habits into a shared experience. You set the boundaries you want, invite trusted friends, and if you want to override a limit, your accountability partner has to share their code. We believe lasting behavior change is easier when the people who care about you are part of the process.

How we built it

We built LightScroll by iterating toward the app we wanted for ourselves. We were our own first users, testing ideas daily, then gradually bringing in friends and family as we rapidly refined the experience.

The project has been built entirely with Codex - initially using GPT-5.5, and since Build Week we've been building even more ambitiously with GPT-5.6. AI accelerated implementation, planning, and code review while product strategy, UX, and design direction remained human-led.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was finding the right balance between accountability and autonomy. We wanted enough friction to help people follow through on their goals without making the experience feel punitive. Finding that balance required constant iteration until it felt natural.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that LightScroll doesn't just help people set limits - it changes the way they stick to them by making screen-time management social. We're also proud that a two-person team was able to build a polished product across multiple Apple platforms entirely with Codex while maintaining a high bar for design and user experience.

What we learned

The biggest lesson we learned is that AI doesn't just help small teams build faster - it lets them build more thoughtfully. By spending less time on implementation and more time on product quality, we were able to focus on creating an experience that we genuinely wanted to use ourselves.

What's next for LightScroll (iOS/macOS)

We're continuing to refine the experience and expand LightScroll across both iOS and macOS. Our focus is on making accountability feel even more natural, deepening the social features, and polishing every interaction until the product feels like something people genuinely enjoy using - not just another utility app.
