✨ Inspiration
I wanted to pay tribute to 80s-style space racing games: pixel art, fast action, agility and cosmic speed. My goal was to build a nostalgic visual universe where players feel like they’re flying through space in a classic arcade style, enhanced with modern touches.
⸻
🕹 What it does • A space racing game where the player controls a ship that must dodge obstacles and race through interstellar tracks or against time. • Features visuals made by me: sprites for ships, planets, backgrounds, and retro effects. • Mechanics include movement, collision detection, acceleration — design inspired by classic arcade gameplay. • Optionally, includes a leaderboard / time tracking so players can compare results.
⸻
🛠 How I built it • Art / Illustrations: all graphics — ships, planets, star fields, backgrounds — drawn by me in retro / pixel / digital style. • Integration: imported my images as sprites and layered backgrounds in the game engine. • Logic: coded movement, collisions, scoring, speed progression using JavaScript (or whatever language / framework used). • Design: side-scrolling or vertical scrolling tracks, dynamic obstacles, increasing speed/difficulty.
⸻
⚔️ Challenges • Making retro graphics look good on modern displays, scaling without losing style. • Integrating the art as sprites and visual layers coherently with gameplay mechanics. • Tuning speed and difficulty to maintain the balance typical of classic arcade games. • Synchronizing the scoreboard/time system with the visual race experience.
⸻
🏆 Achievements • Created all the visual art with a retro space aesthetic. • Developed a playable prototype that merges classic art with functional mechanics. • Effectively captured the nostalgia of 80s space racers, while giving it a modern spin.
⸻
📚 What I learned
I learned how to bring old-school visual style into a modern game environment while maintaining aesthetic coherence and playability. I also gained insight into integrating pixel art into contemporary game engines without losing charm.
⸻
🚀 What’s next • Add more levels / space routes with graphic variety. • Introduce obstacles, power-ups or additional challenges. • Develop a time / ranking / leaderboard system. • Port the game to mobile / web platforms so more people can play.
