Inspiration
Access to quality education remains unequal across the globe, especially in regions with limited internet infrastructure. We were inspired to create Light to bridge that digital divide by making learning accessible, interactive, and immersive—regardless of bandwidth or location. The rise of powerful tools like Google’s Gemini AI and decentralized networks like Theta made it possible to reimagine what an educational platform could look like in 2025.
What it does
Light is a responsive web application that delivers AI-enhanced, peer-to-peer educational experiences. It features:
- Real-time AI chat (Light Chat) using Gemini for Q&A and tutoring.
- Video Course Explorer powered by Gemini for content discovery.
- AI-generated image support using Google Imagen for visual learning.
- Peer-to-peer video delivery using the Theta Network, optimized for low-connectivity environments.
- Community-based learning tools enabling collaboration and content sharing among users.
How we built it
We built Light using the following technologies:
- Frontend: React and Tailwind CSS for responsive UI/UX.
- Backend: Node.js and Firebase for authentication and data storage.
- Gemini API: Powers AI chat and course search experiences.
- Google Imagen API: Used for educational image generation.
- Theta Video API: Enables peer-to-peer video delivery and uploading.
- Vercel: For seamless and fast deployment.
Challenges we ran into
- Integrating peer-to-peer video hosting with seamless playback across devices.
- Handling latency and quality in real-time AI responses.
- Making the AI interaction contextually relevant to ongoing videos.
- Ensuring accessibility and performance on low-end devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully combining Gemini AI, Imagen, and Theta in a single, user-friendly application.
- Creating a platform that works even in areas with weak connectivity.
- Designing a user interface that is both intuitive and feature-rich.
- Enabling true peer-to-peer education experiences globally.
What we learned
- How to orchestrate multiple cutting-edge APIs (Gemini, Imagen, Theta) into a unified experience.
- The importance of optimizing for low-resource environments when building educational tech.
- Real-time AI chat has huge potential to transform the way students learn independently.
What's next for Light education
- Building mobile-native versions for Android/iOS.
- Adding support for community-generated quizzes and flashcards.
- Introducing multilingual support using Gemini’s translation features.
- Expanding to include live classes and AI-generated progress tracking.
- Partnering with NGOs and rural schools to test Light in real-world conditions.
