We invest thousands of dollars into laptops, smartphones, leased vehicles, rented apartments, and delivered parcels. Yet when dispute strikes—a landlord unfairly withholds a security deposit for a pre-existing scratch, an online shipment arrives crushed, or hardware fails two weeks after warranty expiration—consumers lack objective, verifiable proof.

Receipts vanish into cluttered email inboxes, photos get buried in camera rolls without timestamps, and dispute claims get rejected. We asked ourselves: What if our physical possessions had their own immutable, AI-powered memory?

That was the spark for LIFEProof—your personal memory for the things you own: Capture it. Track it. Prove it.

What it does

LIFEProof turns your camera into an AI-powered visual memory vault that establishes baseline condition audits, actively monitors warranties, and generates certified legal proof:

• Smart AI Condition Capture: Powered by Google Gemini Multimodal Vision AI, LIFEProof sweeps across photos with a real-time radar scan, identifies items, detects micro-damage (scratches, dents, cracks), and scores condition.
• Rule 5: AI Suggests, User Confirms: To ensure legal ownership and integrity, the AI highlights defects with bounding boxes, but requires the user’s one-tap confirmation before sealing the record.
• Proactive Warranty Radar: Color-coded urgency alerts (like our Sony WH-1000XM5 banner warning of 42 days left) prevent warranties from expiring unnoticed.
• Interactive Before/After Split Slider: Our hero feature lets users drag a 60 FPS slider handle (⇄) between a past baseline (e.g., Aug 12 move-in) and today’s check, dynamically isolating newly flagged changes (🔴 1 New wall scratch) while verifying untouched areas (🟢 2 Unchanged).
• Ask My Stuff (Conversational AI Assistant): A natural language assistant that queries your personal inventory graph—ask "Which warranties expire this month?" or "When was my laptop serviced?" and get instant answers with linked item cards.
• Certified Cryptographic Evidence Reports: One-click generation of official, stamped condition reports complete with timestamped photos and a SHA-256 cryptographic seal ready for PDF export or printing.
• RevenueCat Monetization Architecture: Integrated paywall modeling modern consumer apps with Free, Monthly ($4.99), Annual ($39.99), and Lifetime ($89.99) tiers, with instant unlock for judges using promo code HACKATHON2026.

How we built it

We designed LIFEProof to feel like a high-end, native consumer product combining the aesthetics of Apple Health, Notion, and Linear:

• Frontend Engine: Built with React 19 and Vite 8 for lightning-fast module loading and silky 60 FPS slider performance.
• Design System: Hand-crafted Vanilla CSS design tokens with sleek dark mode, frosted-glass glassmorphism, and responsive viewports (toggleable between an iPhone 16 Pro mockup frame with Dynamic Island and full desktop mode).
• AI Vision Engine: Hybrid integration using Google Gemini 1.5 & 2.0 Flash Vision API with prompt-engineered structured JSON outputs and an intelligent local heuristic fallback engine for instant offline response.
• Integrity & Verification: Embedded SHA-256 cryptographic hashing to provide verifiable checksum seals on all generated evidence packages.
• Monetization Layer: Complete RevenueCat SDK paywall architecture with promo code verification and dynamic confetti celebrations.

Challenges we ran into

1. Balancing AI Autonomy with Legal Reliability: AI vision models can occasionally hallucinate subtle textures as cracks or scratches. We solved this by strictly adhering to Human-in-the-Loop Safeguards: the AI proposes observations as tentative suggestions, and the user must verify them before they enter the append-only timeline.
2. 60 FPS Responsive Comparison Slider: Implementing smooth, sub-millisecond draggable image clipping across mobile touch events and desktop cursor pointer events required custom pointer listener math and optimized CSS clip-path calculations.
3. Offline & Low-Connectivity Resilience: Users often inspect basement storage units, parking garages, or newly leased apartments with poor cellular connectivity. We engineered an offline heuristic engine that preserves complete scanning functionality even without an active internet connection.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Flawless User Experience: Delivering a fluid, premium web app that feels indistinguishable from a native mobile application.
• The Before/After Split Slider: Achieving a tactile, responsive comparison tool that makes condition differences immediately obvious to any landlord, insurer, or evaluator.
• Complete End-to-End Product Flow: Integrating intake, condition classification, warranty tracking, natural language querying, and certified PDF exporting into one cohesive loop.
• Zero-Backend Static Architecture: Deploying a complex AI-driven application entirely client-side with automated GitHub Actions CI/CD to GitHub Pages.

What we learned

• How to effectively prompt multimodal vision LLMs to return strict, coordinate-accurate JSON bounding boxes and severity metrics.
• Best practices for designing non-intrusive, privacy-first personal vaults where sensitive personal property data stays safely in the user’s local storage.
• Structuring accessible, keyboard- and touch-friendly interactive sliders without relying on heavy third-party UI libraries.

What's next for LIFEProof

• LiDAR 3D Spatial Scans: Utilizing mobile LiDAR sensors to create full 3D digital twins of apartments and rooms for comprehensive lease condition auditing.
• Automated Receipt & Warranty OCR: Auto-importing purchase dates and warranty terms by simply taking a picture of a paper receipt or forwarding an email invoice.
• Direct Insurance & Carrier Claims Integration: One-click electronic claim dispatch to AppleCare, Asurion, FedEx, and major rental property management portals.
