Inspiration
We were inspired by Cox's Social Good prompt to find a marginalized and underrepresented group in society to build for. Benevolence, who worked predominantly on our front-end, has a history working with Must Ministries
What it does
We developed a React.js w/ Vite project that can take document PDFs or photos of important documents that a user uploaded, store these photos in a Supabase database, allow the user to access them online, and have the Gemini model we implemented using the Gemini API pull text from the files and print it onto a formatted JSON file.
How we built it
We engineered LifeLocker as a high-performance, consumer-centric digital sanctuary utilizing the Vite frontend tooling framework for a lightning-fast user experience. We established a secure, user-centric onboarding pipeline by integrating Auth0 for identity management and Supabase for robust cloud database storage. To bridge the gap between physical files and digital backups, we built an intuitive file upload interface directly inside the React components. This interface seamlessly streams user-uploaded document images into Google Gemini API's gemini-3.8-flash multimodal-capable model. By harnessing this next-generation AI, our pipeline automatically parses the images to instantly extract structured JSON data, creating an intelligent safety net that protects users if they ever lose their real-world documents.
Challenges we ran into
Due to the time constraints, there are a few errors that we could not yet solve. The Gemini API does not always respond quickly enough and sometimes fails for seemingly no reason.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud to have integrated all three APIs with Supabase, Auth0, and Gemini API. We are also very pleased to have gotten as far as we did in as short of time as we had, in spite of all the errors that we ran into.
What we learned
We learned how to install React.js with Vite, how to make API keys and integrate those APIs into our system, how to make a quick-yet-robust database using Supabase, and the resourcefulness of AI both within our program and throughout the development process.
What's next for LifeLocker
In the future, we would love to implement fiile sharing in order for users to directly send files to the appropriate parties as well as portal access for trusted non-profits and shelter workers to view authorized documents with user consent.
