Inspiration

Natural disasters often devastate infrastructures, isolating communities when they most need help. Inspired by these challenges, we created LifeLink to bridge communication gaps during critical times, using readily available technology in innovative ways.

What it does

LifeLink provides a reliable, decentralized communication platform that functions even when traditional networks fail. It enables users to send instant messages, share locations, and receive updates about ongoing emergencies. The app also features a map integration for navigating through affected areas and an alert system for immediate emergency notifications.

How we built it

We built LifeLink using React Native, which allows for cross-platform mobile app development from a single JavaScript codebase. Backend services were implemented using Node.js, and we leveraged various APIs, including Google Maps for real-time geolocation services. The app uses a mesh network to maintain connectivity through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct technologies.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was ensuring reliable communication under limited network availability. Developing a robust mesh networking solution that could dynamically adapt to changing conditions and maintain data integrity was particularly challenging. Additionally, optimizing the user interface for ease of use during stressful and potentially hazardous situations required iterative testing and feedback.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a functional prototype that reliably works under simulated disaster scenarios. Successfully integrating mesh networking for offline communication and implementing real-time location sharing and emergency alerts were significant achievements. The positive feedback from initial testing sessions with emergency responders has also been incredibly affirming.

What we learned

Throughout the development process, we learned about the complexities of mesh networking, the importance of intuitive UI/UX design in emergency applications, and the challenges of handling real-time data synchronization without internet access. We also gained insights into the specific needs of emergency responders and affected individuals during disasters.

What's next for Lifelink

Moving forward, we plan to enhance the robustness of the network, integrate more comprehensive mapping tools, and expand our platform to include voice and video communication capabilities. Additionally, we aim to collaborate with disaster relief organizations to tailor LifeLink's features to the needs of first responders and affected communities.
