Inspiration

Thalassemia is a chronic blood disorder that requires regular blood transfusions. During our research and community interactions, we found that patients—especially in rural areas—face serious challenges finding timely blood donors and affording treatment. This inspired us to build a platform that combines AI with community support to solve real-world health issues.

What it does

LifeLink AI is a web-based platform that:

  • Connects Thalassemia patients with potential blood donors based on location and blood group.
  • Estimates the cost of upcoming treatments using AI to help families plan and seek financial support.
  • Creates a network effect of continuous support for patients through donor alerts and contact forms.

How we built it

We used:

  • Streamlit for building the front-end user interface.
  • Python for backend logic and AI estimation modules.
  • Pandas & scikit-learn for data handling and model training.
  • Firebase for storage and real-time database integration (initially considered).
  • Streamlit Cloud for hosting and deployment.
  • Designed a donor form, request form, and cost estimation tool with user-friendly interactions.

Challenges we ran into

  • Handling input validation and real-time feedback across pages in Streamlit.
  • Collecting realistic healthcare data for training cost-estimation models.
  • Ensuring scalability and user-friendliness for people in rural/low-tech areas.
  • Limited time to integrate more advanced features like SMS alerts and multi-language support.

Accomplishments we’re proud of

  • Developed a full-stack functioning prototype within the hackathon timeline.
  • Integrated a functional blood donor search system.
  • Built a simple cost estimator with AI model predictions.
  • Successfully deployed and shared our Streamlit app: LifeLink AI App

What we learned

  • Building impactful AI tools requires both empathy and technical skill.
  • Streamlit is a powerful and fast tool for data-app prototyping.
  • Importance of user experience, especially for healthcare-related apps.
  • Working as a team under tight deadlines can produce creative solutions.

What's next

  • Add SMS and email notifications to alert registered donors.
  • Integrate verified hospitals and NGOs for financial aid support.
  • Expand to more diseases and support communities with similar chronic needs.
  • Add multilingual support and voice interface for accessibility.

Feeling proud to share LifeLink AI, a platform we built to make a real difference for people living with Thalassemia.

It connects patients with compatible blood donors quickly and easily, helping reduce the time and stress involved in finding support during critical times.

We also added a smart feature that estimates treatment costs based on things like transfusion frequency and iron levels — all personalized and easy to understand.

Built using Streamlit for a clean and interactive experience, and Firebase on the backend to keep everything fast and scalable.

This started as a hackathon project, but the vision is growing — we’re thinking about adding chatbots, linking with hospitals, and tracking donations in future versions.

It’s been a great journey combining AI and compassion — and this is just the beginning.
