Real-Time Blood Donor Matching Platform for Thalassemia Patients
A Smart, AI-Driven Solution to Support Regular Transfusion Needs
Inspiration
Thalassemia patients require frequent and timely blood transfusions to survive. However, coordinating the availability of the right blood type, from the right donor, at the right time is a logistical and emotional challenge — especially for families dependent on informal donor networks.
Inspired by the mission of Blood Warriors and platforms like e-RaktKosh, our goal is to build a real-time, intelligent platform that connects patients and donors safely, reliably, and at scale.
What We Learned
In the process of designing this solution:
- We explored AI-driven predictive models for healthcare logistics.
- Learned about national blood bank systems like e-RaktKosh.
- Understood the sensitive dynamics of transfusion management for chronic illnesses like Thalassemia.
- Studied data security norms (e.g., HIPAA, Indian Health IT policies) to design secure and privacy-first features.
How We Built the Idea
The project began with two core goals:
- Reduce donor-response delay and stress for Thalassemia patients and their families.
- Leverage AI and public data to make the blood donation system smarter and more proactive.
We aim to build an AI-powered web platform that supports:
- Smart donor-patient matching
- Predictive donor availability
- Secure integration with existing platforms like e-RaktKosh and Blood Warriors’ “Blood Bridge”
Target Problem Statement
Patients with Thalassemia face:
- Difficulty in finding suitable donors in real-time
- Lack of visibility into blood bank inventories
- Uncertainty in donor response and consistency
- No unified platform that combines donor discovery, inventory management, and AI recommendations
Our solution addresses the gap between blood demand and supply, especially for recurring transfusion-dependent patients, using technology, automation, and AI.
Proposed Solution
We propose a web-based platform that:
- Matches Thalassemia patients with available and willing donors in real time
- Uses AI to predict donor availability based on historical behavior and donation frequency
- Integrates with e-RaktKosh API to avoid unnecessary donor calls if blood is already available
- Tracks donor contribution history, encouraging recurring participation and recognition
- Supports patient education with transfusion reminders, alerts, and care content
Unique Value Proposition
Unlike existing solutions that:
- Only focus on blood stock tracking (like e-RaktKosh)
- Or depend on manual donor calls
Our platform combines:
- AI + Live Blood Bank Data + Secure Donor Coordination
- Fully automated matching logic
- Real-time response from donors and systems
- Smart alerts, feedback loops, and dashboards
Technology Stack
| Layer | Tools & Frameworks |
|---|---|
| Frontend | HTML5, TailwindCSS, JavaScript, React or Next.js |
| Backend | Node.js with Express.js |
| Database | PostgreSQL or MongoDB (secure schema for donor/patient) |
| AI/ML | Python (pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow), FastAPI (for ML serving) |
| APIs | e-RaktKosh API, Blood Warriors’ APIs (if accessible) |
| Authentication | OAuth2, JWT, role-based access for patient/donor/provider |
| Security | HTTPS, Data encryption (AES), Role-based access |
| Hosting | Render / Vercel for frontend, Railway / Heroku for backend |

Functionality
Patient Portal
- Register transfusion need, view status
- View nearby blood bank stock
- Confirm donor arrival, provide feedback
Donor Dashboard
- View upcoming eligible donation dates
- Accept or decline matching requests
- Track donation history, receive badges
Admin Panel
- Oversee matching queue
- Integrate APIs with e-RaktKosh or hospital
- Monitor system health, audit trail
Scope for Modifications
- Extend to mobile app (React Native / Flutter)
- Include hospital workflows for doctors and transfusion center management
- Implement AI-powered blood request forecasting per region
Impact
- Immediate access to blood for chronic patients
- Reduction in search time and anxiety for families
- Increased donor retention through engagement and gamification
- Better resource utilization with e-RaktKosh API
Helps Blood Warriors scale the “Blood Bridge” initiative by:
- Automating donor reach
- Ensuring repeat donors stay engaged
- Providing educational support for long-term care
Challenges, Constraints, and Risks
- Real-time availability of donor and blood stock data
- Ensuring data privacy and compliance with medical records standards
- Maintaining donor interest and consistent response rates
- System scale-up in terms of notifications, concurrency
- Limited access to some public or restricted APIs
Assumptions
- Blood banks are updating stock levels in e-RaktKosh in near-real-time.
- Donors are willing to opt-in to receive periodic reminders.
- Blood Warriors and similar organizations are open to API/data sharing partnerships.
- Patients will have basic digital literacy to use the web platform.
Timeline
| Phase | Description |
|---|---|
| Hackathon (Day 1–2) | - Build web interface (frontend + backend) - Static donor-patient matching prototype - Integrate mock data from e-RaktKosh - Develop AI logic for donor availability prediction (rules-based) - Deploy chatbot MVP for awareness |
| Post-Hackathon (1–2 weeks) | - Train and refine AI model using real donor data - Integrate live APIs (e-RaktKosh, Blood Bridge) - Add real users and enable verified authentication (Firebase/Auth0) - Improve chatbot using Langchain + LLM |
| Beyond (1–2 months) | - Launch beta version in partnership with Blood Warriors - Collect user feedback and iterate on features - Add mobile-first version and integrate hospital dashboards - Begin real-time tracking of donor engagement and AI performance metrics |
Summary
