Inspiration
A friend of ours once donated blood at a hospital. Exactly six months later, the same hospital kept calling her, stating there was a blood shortage and that they didn't know anyone else who was eligible to donate except her. This revealed a critical gap—there is a missing link between eligible donors and hospitals. Many hospitals struggle to find donors due to a lack of proper tracking, while eligible donors remain unaware of urgent needs.
What it does
- For Hospitals LinkLife Rwanda streamlines blood donation event management and donor coordination, enabling hospitals to manage blood supply and engage with eligible donors.
- Event Management – Plan and schedule blood donation events, specifying date, time, and location.
- Appointment Scheduling – Manage donor appointments for both scheduled blood drives and routine hospital visits.
- Volunteer Tracking – Monitor and log volunteer participation for reporting, engagement analysis, and future outreach.
- For Volunteers Volunteers can easily find donation opportunities, schedule appointments, and receive personalized guidance for a smooth donation experience.
- Event Discovery – View a real-time list of upcoming blood donation events based on location.
- Hospital Directory – Locate nearby hospitals that accept walk-in blood donations.
- Appointment Booking – Secure a donation slot at events or hospitals with a seamless scheduling system.
- Pre- and Post-Donation Guidance – Receive AI-powered recommendations on:
- Pre-donation: Hydration, diet, and preparation tips.
- Post-donation: Recovery strategies and personalized health insights.
- USSD application for volunteers who don't have access to smart mobile phones
How we built it
We developed the platform using Flutter for the frontend, ensuring a smooth experience across both mobile and web applications. The backend is powered by NestJS, providing a scalable and efficient infrastructure for handling user data and donation event management. Additionally, we integrated OpenAI's models to power our chatbot, enabling real-time responses to donor queries and personalized recommendations.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was obtaining reliable statistics from Rwanda Biomedical Centre regarding the number of people who have access to blood donation information. Access to real-time healthcare data is crucial for optimizing our platform, and the lack of transparency made it difficult to analyze donor trends effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully implemented a complete volunteer journey on both the backend and frontend, ensuring that volunteers can have access to blood donation events that are close, know their eligibility to donate blood, and book appointments to donate blood to a preferred hospital.
What we learned
This project was our first time working with AI models, and we gained valuable experience in integrating machine learning solutions into a real-world healthcare platform. We also deepened our understanding of how volunteer engagement can be improved through technology.
What's next for LifeLink
- Expand the platform to include other user flows, such as hospital administrators and blood banks.
- Develop a web platform for hospitals to manage donations more efficiently.
- Introduce a USSD application for people without smartphones, ensuring accessibility for all potential donors.
