Inspiration
With rising rates of anxiety, depression, and isolation—especially among teens and young adults—we were inspired to create LifeLine, a digital mental health ally designed to provide real-time emotional support, guidance, and a sense of connection for anyone struggling silently.
What it does
LifeLine is an AI-powered mental wellness app that offers anonymous emotional support, daily check-ins, mindfulness tools, and crisis-response resources—available 24/7 to ensure no one feels alone when it matters most.
How we built it
We built LifeLine using Replit as our development environment with a Python backend, integrated the OpenAI API for natural language responses, used Flask for the web framework, and designed the UI using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—all hosted and tested entirely online.
Challenges we ran into
We faced hurdles integrating the API effectively, crafting sensitive and empathetic chatbot responses, and ensuring privacy while maintaining a simple, approachable interface for users in distress.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a functional MVP that could genuinely help someone in need, building a powerful mental health tool from scratch in just days, and staying true to our mission of impact over complexity.
What we learned
We learned how to responsibly use AI for mental health, collaborate under pressure, quickly iterate based on feedback, and prioritize user experience in emotionally sensitive contexts.
What's next for LifeLine
We plan to incorporate real-time human counselor escalation, add journaling and mood tracking features, implement end-to-end encryption for privacy, and launch a beta version in partnership with local schools and mental health nonprofits.
