Inspiration
Mental health challenges are at an all-time high, yet support systems often feel fragmented, inaccessible, or overwhelming. We wanted to create something that not only helps during a crisis, but also empowers people to build daily habits of wellness and community. LifeLine was inspired by the simple question: “What if support was always just one tap away?”
What it does
LifeLine is an AI-powered mental health companion that supports users across their full wellness journey. Daily Mood Check-in: Track emotions with quick, emoji-based logs and optional journaling. Personalized Wellness Plans: Tailored activities like mindfulness, movement, and affirmations to improve mental resilience. 24/7 Crisis Support: Immediate access to hotlines, text lines, and coping strategies when things feel overwhelming. Community Support: Safe, anonymous spaces to connect with others through themed groups (anxiety, grief, student stress, etc.). Curated Resources: Articles, videos, and podcasts on anxiety, mindfulness, sleep, and therapy techniques. Privacy by Design: Encrypted data, anonymous mode, and user-controlled data exports.
How we built it
We developed LifeLine as a full-stack web app using: Frontend: React + Tailwind for a clean, accessible UI. Backend: Node.js/Express APIs for handling mood logs, activity data, and user settings. AI Integration: Lightweight AI models to personalize wellness recommendations based on mood patterns. Database: MongoDB for securely storing user data with end-to-end encryption. Deployment: Vercel for frontend hosting and cloud-based APIs for scalability.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing sensitivity with simplicity: Designing crisis support features required careful wording and user flow to avoid overwhelming users. Privacy concerns: Ensuring users felt safe sharing emotions meant implementing strong encryption and anonymous posting options. Personalization: Building AI-driven wellness plans that feel relevant without being generic was a tough balance. Time constraints: Integrating multiple features (check-ins, community, crisis support, resources) in one hackathon-ready app was ambitious.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working prototype with daily check-ins, AI-driven recommendations, and 24/7 crisis support. Created a supportive community space with anonymous posting and peer encouragement. Designed an empathetic, user-friendly interface that feels approachable rather than clinical. Prioritized data security and privacy from the start — rare in early-stage health apps.
What we learned
Designing for mental health requires empathy first. Even small UI decisions (like emojis for mood) can reduce barriers to engagement. AI in wellness works best as an enhancer, not a replacement. Users still want human connection through community and resources. Collaboration matters. Our team combined technical, design, and mental health perspectives to shape LifeLine.
What's next for LifeLine
Mobile App: Expanding beyond web to iOS/Android for accessibility. Deeper AI Insights: Advanced pattern detection to spot early warning signs and suggest proactive care. Gamified Wellness Tracking: Streaks, badges, and progress visualizations to encourage habit-building. Integration with Professionals: Secure therapist dashboards for optional data sharing. Language Accessibility: Multilingual support to reach a global audience.
