Inspiration

It is the 21st century and we are still managing ambulances on phone calls. In times of emergency and urgency, you should have a simple and fast way to call for help. Therefore, we created Lifeline to facilitate this essential process for all users.

What it does

Lifeline is an iOS mobile app that assists users with many of its features in different kinds of situations. For instance, calling an ambulance in the middle of nowhere or in a new environment can be daunting because you may have no idea how to describe your current location to them. With lifeline, not only is your current location displayed on a map, but it is also displayed in an easy to read address format. This address can then be told to an operator when calling through our app or automatically shared with the ambulance via an automated text message with a single tap. Moreover, Lifeline automatically calls/texts the ambulance number of the country you are currently in, meaning Lifeline can be used internationally.

How we built it

We built our mobile app from scratch using Swift and SwiftUI while designing it with Figma. We decided to work on the logic and the UI at the same time for efficiency. Thus, while some of us were coding through Xcode, others were focused on creating a Figma prototype. This helped us inspire each other with more ideas through the development of product. Lifeline has been a continuous effort from all the members.

Challenges we ran into

All of the members of the Hackstreet Boys had no experience with app development, even less with Swift and SwiftUI. Fortunately, our members were able to pick it up quickly and we adapted accordingly. Moreover, since none of us had experience we designing an app, we had to also learn that from scratch. Thankfully, we used resources given to us and attended the mini-workshops HackGT provided.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to work very well together as team and had great synergy. Our time management was also something we are proud as we were able to complete most of what we wanted. We are also very proud of our prototype. Most importantly though, we are proud that we were able to start from nothing and finish with a product we are satisfied with.

What we learned

Firstly, we're starting to understand the cycle and management behind developing an app - it has really given us insight to this industry. Furthermore, some of us were able to pick up new skills that will definitely help us in the future.

What's next for Lifeline

As we continue our journey developing Lifeline, we would like to incorporate third party apps and improve upon our UI/UX design. Currently, our figma prototype allows users to select an Uber option which automatically redirects users to the Uber ridesharing app with the current location and closest hospital already selected for convenience. Our design will also be improved and we plan on implementing more features to help a more international audience.
