Inspiration
Most retirement calculators are boring, inaccurate, and frankly ugly. They track the growth of one account at best without considering key factors like debt, savings accounts, and home ownership. This leads to inaccurate calculations and trouble predicting how paying off debt would impact your future net worth. The abstract numerical account value that most retirement planners spit out is also just too obtuse to connect with most young people. All of these issues and more are why we made an accurate retirement planner with fun AI powered tools that help young people connect with their future!
What it does
Follow the multipage flow, inputing your details at each prompt. The final page will be a shareable interesting retirement visualization.
How we built it
This projects frontend was created with svelte using a custom ui library, along with a flask backend utilizing mongo db for persistence.
Challenges we ran into
Building apps is hard! We ran into all number of errors, but we'll go ahead and list a few here.
- css really almost never does what you would like it to, especially when are styling your own custom ui kit
- finding information about cost of living is a bit more tricky than a google search, especially when you're building your own dataset!
- writing your own methodology for calculating future net worth that considers several financial factors is hard
- design wise, coming up with an interesting way to get users to input financial data is tough, especially when you're the first to do it
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We did it! We are just happy to have created a tool we are excited to use :)
What we learned
We learned team work makes the dream work, and that not all that shimmers is diet pepsi.
What's next for Life's a Beach Retirement Planner
Who knows? We see big things in the future for this little app, or maybe we'll retire it ;)
