Inspiration
The inspiration for Life Prescriber came from witnessing the struggles faced by individuals living with chronic illnesses in urban areas of Sub-Saharan Africa. One story that particularly moved us was that of a young mother named Zahra, who juggled her job and caring for her two children while managing her diabetes. Despite her best efforts, Zahra often found herself confused about her medication schedule, missing doses, and feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of her treatment plan.
One evening, after a long day at work, Zahra realized she had forgotten to take her insulin. Panic set in as she thought about the potential consequences for her health and her family. This moment of vulnerability highlighted the urgent need for a solution that could support individuals like Zahra—people who are not just numbers but mothers, fathers, and caregivers striving to maintain their health while fulfilling their responsibilities.
We wanted to create a solution that empowers individuals like Zahra to take control of their health and improve their quality of life. Life Prescriber is designed to be that lifeline, providing the tools and support necessary to navigate the challenges of chronic illness management confidently.
What it does
Life Prescriber is an application designed to simplify medication management for individuals with chronic illnesses. This app provides a comprehensive solution that not only helps users but also actively involves healthcare providers, including clinicians at local hospitals and pharmacies.
Key Features:
Medication Tracking: Life Prescriber helps users receive real-time notifications for medication refills and important health reminders, ensuring they stay on track with their treatment plans and improve adherence rates without requiring users to remember complex schedules.
Clinician Integration: Life Prescriber facilitates communication between users and their healthcare providers. Clinicians can access real-time patient medication adherence data, allowing them to make informed decisions and adjust treatment plans as needed. This integration ensures that users receive personalized care tailored to their specific needs.
Pharmacy Collaboration: The app connects directly with local pharmacies, enabling automatic refill requests and notifications for users. This means that users don't have to worry about running out of medications or navigating the refill process; the app handles it.
Real-Time Notifications: Users receive real-time notifications for medication refills and important health reminders, ensuring they stay on track with their treatment plans.
How We Stand Out:
What sets Life Prescriber apart from other solutions is its focus on minimizing user effort. Unlike many apps requiring users to input extensive information or manually track their medications, Life Prescriber integrates healthcare providers and pharmacies, automating much of this process. Users only need to take their medications as prescribed; the app takes care of the rest. This hands-off approach reduces the burden on individuals, allowing them to focus on their daily lives without the constant worry of managing their health.
How we built it
We built Life Prescriber using various technologies to ensure a robust and scalable application. Our tech stack includes the following:
Django: We utilized Django, a high-level Python web framework, to handle the back-end development. Django's built-in features, such as an admin panel and user authentication, enabled us to quickly create a secure and user-friendly application.
JavaScript: We employed JavaScript to create an interactive and responsive user interface for the front end. This ensures clinicians easily navigate the app, whether tracking medications or accessing health insights.
SQLite: We chose SQLite as our database solution for its simplicity and lightweight nature. This choice allows for efficient data storage and quick access to user information, making it ideal for our application's needs.
Celery and Celery Beat: To manage background tasks and scheduling, we implemented Celery and Celery Beat. These tools enable us to send timely notifications and reminders to users without overloading the main application, ensuring that users receive real-time updates about their medication schedules and refills.
Challenges we ran into
Throughout the development process, we encountered several challenges that tested our problem-solving skills and resilience:
Automated Prescription Reminders: One of the significant challenges was implementing automated prescription reminders. We used Celery for task scheduling but quickly realized that its functionality is OS-dependent. The lack of solid implementation examples across different operating systems and complex documentation made setting up and configuring reminders effectively difficult. We had to invest considerable time in troubleshooting and experimenting with different configurations to achieve the desired functionality.
Dynamic End Date Algorithm: Another challenge involved writing the algorithm to dynamically adjust a prescription's "End Date" when a patient's medication regimen changes. This required careful consideration of various factors, such as dosage adjustments and refill schedules. Ensuring the algorithm accurately reflected changes without confusing users was a complex task requiring multiple iterations and thorough testing.
User Data Security: Ensuring the security of user data was a top priority, but it also presented challenges. We needed to implement robust security measures to protect sensitive health information while ensuring compliance with data protection regulations. This involved integrating encryption protocols, secure authentication methods, and tokenization. Balancing user convenience with stringent security measures was a delicate task that required thoughtful planning and execution.
Despite these challenges, we remained committed to our vision and worked to find solutions. Each obstacle provided valuable lessons that strengthened the application and our team.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have developed a solution that has the potential to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals managing chronic illnesses. Our research indicates that approximately 5.2 million individuals in our target audience across urban areas like Lagos, Accra, and Nairobi could benefit from Life Prescriber. This significant number underscores the importance of our solution and the potential for positive change in the lives of many.
While we have not yet launched the app for widespread testing, we are eager to put Life Prescriber into the world and gather user feedback. Real-world usage will provide invaluable insights that will help us refine and enhance the application.
Additionally, we are proud of the algorithm we developed to dynamically adjust the "End Date" of prescriptions based on changes in a patient's medication regimen. This algorithm ensures that users receive accurate and timely medication information, reducing confusion and improving adherence.
What we learned
This project has taught us the importance of empathy in design and development. By actively engaging with potential users and understanding their challenges, we created a solution that truly addresses their needs. We also learned the value of working closely with healthcare professionals as they provided invaluable insights that shaped our approach.
What's next for Life Prescriber
As we move forward, our primary focus is improving the application's functionalities and then establishing solid partnerships with local hospitals, pharmacies, and insurance providers to gain more insights into the health space for Life Prescriber.
In addition to these partnerships, we plan to enhance our notification features by incorporating alerts through popular social media platforms. This approach will cater to demographics that may not rely heavily on email, ensuring that important medication reminders reach users in a convenient and familiar way.
Also, Life Prescriber plans to analyze user data to provide tailored health insights and recommendations, helping users understand their medication regimens better.
Furthermore, we are excited to expand the scope of Life Prescriber by incorporating support for a broader range of prescriptions, including not just tablets but also other forms of medication such as injections, patches, and inhalers. This will allow us to serve a wider audience and address the diverse needs of individuals managing various chronic conditions.
We are looking to make Life Prescriber a useful tool in people's healthcare journey.
