Inspiration

Life of a Showguy was inspired by my wife and daughter (two crazy Swifties). Watching the way an artist could build a whole world and create massive fan connections made me wonder: What if I created the opposite of a global superstar?

Someone hilariously confident, totally unknown, and still absolutely convinced he's destined for Madison Square Garden?

But who? And what? Well, I love old school hip hop. And I’m a dork. Sounds like a remix to me.

Step aside, Showgirl… make room for Showguy.

Showguy is the world’s most confident unknown rapper. Inspired by Sugar Hill Gang, Run-D.M.C., Beastie Boys, and more from the golden age of hip hop, he brings boom-bap beats, corny charm, and pure 80s energy straight from his NYC apartment. Backed by his sidekick Scratch (an orange tabby who may or may not be his DJ), Showguy’s mission is clear: drop rhymes, spin cassettes, and one day sell out Madison Square Garden.

What I Wanted to Explore

I set out to build a complete character, voice, visuals, humor, lore, and then create a song and music video that brought that world to life. And there had to be a pet antagonist. I wanted the video to feel handmade, funny, and rooted in vintage aesthetics in the same way early hip-hop videos were: DIY, low-budget, full of hustle, charm, and personality.

How the Music Video Was Built

I developed the concept, song, visuals, and overall creative direction from scratch.

Songwriting

Blending old-school rhythms with playful self-delusion (with the help of ChatGPT). I used Suno for song generation.

Storyboarding / Telling

I started by developing the scenes where Showguy would film in his NYC apartment. I used Nano Banana and Veo 3 to create a rough video as a way to storyboard and explore visual texture and style.

Visual Style

I wanted the visual foundation to be VHS textures, vintage electronics, retro lighting, and a slightly comedic tone.

AI + Practical Workflows

  • Generated the base characters and scenes on Nano Banana
  • Upscaled everything using LetsEnhance
  • Used Photoshop to create all base images at 16:9
  • Uploaded those images to Veo 3/3.1 to generate final videos
  • Used ChatGPT for prompt refinement when things got tricky
  • Licensed a few clips of vintage electronics from Artlist to nail the style (used sparingly)

Editing

I used ScreenFlow to combine all Veo generations.

What I Learned

Creating a fully realized artist from scratch is equal parts creativity, constraint, patience, and problem-solving. I learned that:

  • Creating a long, cohesive, consistent video is quite hard. Writing and generating a song is also hard.
  • You are not always in control when using AI. You must adapt, make trade-offs, and sometimes freestyle with unexpected outputs.
  • Getting the perfect generation, whether Nano or Veo, is wildly unpredictable and time-consuming. I generated an absurd number of images and videos just to make a 4-minute video.
  • Pay attention to details early. You don’t want to redo work because of 6 fingers, 2 elbows on one arm, or a tail-less cat.
  • AI physics can be extremely weird with dancing (especially breakdancing), car tires, etc.
  • The tools are good. I can’t wait for them to be great.

Challenges

Some of the biggest challenges included:

  • Maintaining scene and character consistency across multiple tools and scenes
  • Balancing comedy and handmade feel with musical and artistic quality
  • Re-creating a vintage VHS-style energy while letting modern tools enhance (not overwhelm) the storytelling

Why This Project Matters

Life of a Showguy is more than a music video… It’s the beginning of a fictional hip-hop persona built with sincerity, humor, nostalgia, and creativity. It’s a tribute to the artists who shaped the golden age, a love letter to DIY culture, and a family-inspired project that turned a silly idea into a complete character with heart.

I had a ton of fun creating this character and music video.

What's Next?

Maybe a Christmas single. Then a full-length album. Showguy is already on Spotify, Apple Music, etc so I guess I have to keep the beats coming...
