Inspiration
According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), just in 2019 around 5 million people worldwide died from diseases caused or related to antimicrobial-resistant infections. These infections are usually caused by bacteria that became resistant to drugs when a person taking a medicine to stop the infection gives up the treatment before the time prescribed by their doctor. This is only one of the many problems related to abandoning a treatment midterm, as the patient will also most likely not recover from his disease. Taking this into account we developed this app to prevent those situations from happening.
What it does
Life Care is an app developed to help people keep track of their medical treatments and motivates them to keep up taking their medications until they are fully healed. In order to achieve those goals it not only has a calendar that allows users to check every drug they will have to take on a specific day, but also sends notifications at the time the patient is meant to take their medications. Furthermore, when a user is going to delete an ongoing therapy he/she receives an alert dialog informing the dangers of taking that action.
How we built it
After brainstorming some ideas, we choose a color pallet and designed the app in Figma. Then we coded the app in Flutter using some native plugins such as the one that send notifications and to save the times to send these notifications, I used and SQLITE database.
Challenges we ran into
The first challenge we faced was to come up with a design that would be both beautiful and functional, without adding more ideas to it than we would have time to code. While programming, many challenges were faced, but the biggest one was to send the notifications, once we intended to use a push notification service such as Firebase, but It would be our first time doing that and we had no idea on how to send these notifications in the time inputted on the app. This problem was solved by using a library that sends them locally in the OS.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud we were able to manage our time well enough so that the app was both visually attractive and performed all the basic functions we needed it to. The two main goals we are proud to have achieved are the notifications system, which took a long time to program and had countless problems at first and the calendar’s interface, which in the end looked exactly as planned despite some setbacks along the way. In the end we are very happy with the final result and the fact that this has been our first hackathon makes this experience even more remarkable to us.
What we learned
We learned some new skills about designing in Figma, how to send notifications locally in Flutter, how to better manage our time and how to work with calendars in Flutter.
What's next for Life Care
We are already looking forward to Life Care’s next steps. We intent to add two new pages to the app, the first one being a chat for people who have already gone through a certain medical treatment to post about their experience and interact/motivate patients who are going through this treatment in the present and the other being an online shopping page for people to buy their medications when they are running out of it.
