Inspiration

We were deeply inspired by our childhoods in that story games were trendy when we were younger and we never really had any STEM-centered games other than ones that teach you homework questions. We wanted a fun way for kids to feel motivated to enter a STEM field.

What it does

It is a personality quiz that increasingly gets more focused as you get through the game. In the end, the story will lead you to your final letter in STEM. The goal is it should inspire users to care more about STEM and consider it in their lives.

How we built it

We sat in a circle and brainstormed an idea. We divided up the work accordingly, eventually ending up to be 2 members doing the majority of the work. One member did the backend and the other did the front end. It was challenging but fun.

Challenges we ran into

We quickly ran into a challenge regarding the other 2 members, as they had little to no communication halfway through day 1. Additionally, we had countless merge conflicts that setback our plan entirely. Our game idea was amazing, but there were enough problems to change the course of the game.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of coming up with relatable prompts and a good UI. Kids like bright colors and we were completely unfamiliar with CSS. Additionally, it was exciting to get everything in Django to work and merge with our existing code. It made for a better overall data set.

What we learned

We learned that everything doesn't go as planned but what matters more is how you bounce back. It's important to be communicative the second there is a setback in a project so everyone can react and act properly. It was our entire group's first time competing in a hack-a-thon so we learned to stay productive earlier

What's next for Life as STEM

We hope to have a larger variety of questions to choose from. Additionally, we wanted an animated plant to grow alongside the completion of the quiz. With more time and member contribution.
