We chose to address the first prompt in the Hackathon challenge to benefit Singaporeans living overseas. For the medium, we adopted the second option of designing a wireframe as our prototype which can perform the most important tasks of our application.
Inspiration
What inspired this project were the experiences of Singaporeans living overseas, many of whom are our friends and loved ones. Many of them wish to remain connected to Singapore and know about the latest schemes and policies, but the means to do so were insufficient and felt more could be done to help reach out to them and keep them connected.
The existing channels used by many overseas Singaporeans are ill suited to this task particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. They are either too formalised (and are often slow) or too informal in the informal networks which Overseas Singaporeans form. Thus they often don't have the ability to provide timely and accurate information and updates and thus communicate well with overseas Singaporeans.
It was from these problems that we sought to design a platform to solve these problems.
What it does
Our solution compiles and aggregates key information to the end user with an emphasis on government policies and updates which directly impact the end user. We provide the ability to find key information and timely updates to the end-user on various areas including changes in Singapore's COVID-19 policy, new Support Schemes, and changes to the CPF and taxation policies.
How we built it
We used a tool called Mockplus to design the wireframes so our end users and the judges can access and interact with the application we have designed. Using this wireframe allows for a prototype to be built on a smartphone template which is where we anticipate this application being used.
Our wireframe is best accessed on a desktop/laptop.
Challenges we ran into
One key challenge we ran into was determining the scope of our application, what features were truly important, with us having to cut out features we had initially planned on including so that the app would be more targeted.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We had some of the overseas Singaporeans, whose feedback we used to formulate the problem, express the issues they faced and provide their inputs. The user response was good and many appreciated the potential for such an application to help them keep in touch with changes that occur in Singapore.
What we learned
Being our first Hackathon, and having come from a background with less exposure to application development, this Hackathon taught us a lot about the principles used everyday at Govtech in application development. The workshops and our mentor gave us a lot of timely and relevant advice to help guide us in our development journey.
What's next for Life after SG
In the future we hope to improve the UI of our application (colour scheme) for colourblind users, conceptualise a tutorial for ease of use, and increase the customization options.
