Inspiration
The game "We become what we behold" inspired us as it was a commentary on how media warps our perceptions. We decided to critique social media in another angle, namely the idea that the arguably arbitrary things we say online garner attention and interaction for seemingly no purpose.
What it does
The game prompts the user for an input, which is considered a post on social media. Then, using an algorithm on the number of buzzwords within the post, score is assigned, which then returns a value for a number of comments and likes the post got.
How we built it
We used Unity as the game engine, and C# as the coding language. It only involved 2 scripts, and using Claude to generate a list of ~1000 buzzwords, we implemented our algorithm and used a few objects to make it run.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the challenges we ran into were the fact that we were extremely low on time. We only had about 3 hours to complete the project due to delays getting to the venue and attempting another idea at first. Additionally, there were several bugs with Unity, and due to the slow nature of our computers, the export time was high, so we were pressed for time at the end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to complete the game, and the style of it is simplistic yet still conveys the caricature and critique of social media.
What we learned
We learned to be on time, how to code in C#, and how to use Unity effectively.
What's next for Lies Parasocial Incorporated
We hope to bring some updates, such as an improved GUI and a multiplayer DLC.
