Video game minimap interfaces, offering intuitive spatial overviews and player tracking for real-time navigation.
What it does
A firefighter enters a smoke-filled structure with near-zero visibility. The helmet-mounted LiDAR begins scanning immediately, generating a detailed 3D map of the interior. This data is streamed live to the command center, where personnel monitor the firefighter’s precise location and environment, enabling real-time guidance and rapid response in the event of distress or injury. The command center can also communicate with fallen over debris that the firefighter cannot see through the thick smoke and bright flames.
How we built it
Ideation sketches on paper, CAD in Fusion360 and SolidWorks, renderings done in Keyshot Studio, and finally assembly of portfolio pages on Adobe InDesign
Challenges we ran into
Long rendering time - due to the clear shell on the Lidar sensor, which pushed us closer to the deadline than we were comfortable.
Accounting for hazardous environments - a number of changes had to be made as we pushed on with the design because of hazards we didn't think of (e.g., high heat, smoke, falling debris, etc)
What's next for Lidar Location Tracker
Develop adaptable mounting solutions - for international helmet standards to ensure global applicability.
Explore integrated helmet designs - where sensors are embedded for streamlined use, improved ergonomics, and enhanced protection.
