Inspiration
A facial recognition system is a technology capable of identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source. There are multiple methods in which facial recognition systems work, but in general, they work by comparing selected facial features from given image with faces within a database. It is also described as a Biometric Artificial Intelligence based application that can uniquely identify a person by analyzing patterns based on the person's facial textures and shape
What it does
While initially a form of computer application, it has seen wider uses in recent times on mobile platforms and in other forms of technology, such as robotics. It is typically used as access control in security systems and can be compared to other biometrics such as fingerprint or eye iris recognition systems. Although the accuracy of facial recognition system as a biometric technology is lower than iris recognition and fingerprint recognition, it is widely adopted due to its contactless and non-invasive process.Recently, it has also become popular as a commercial identification and marketing tool. Other applications include advanced human-computer interaction, video surveillance, automatic indexing of images, and video database, among others.
How I built it
Face detection and recognition in image processing to build a system that will detect and recognise frontal faces of students in a classroom. “A face is the front part of a person’s head from the forehead to the chin, or the corresponding part of an animal” . In human interactions, the face is the most important factor as it contains important information about a person or individual. All humans have the ability to recognise individuals from their faces. The proposed solution is to develop a working prototype of a system that will facilitate class control for Kingston University lecturers in a classroom by detecting the frontal faces of students from a picture taken in a classroom. The second part of the system will also be able to perform a facial recognition against a small database. In recent years, research has been carried out and face recognition and detection systems have been developed. Some of which are used on social media platforms, banking apps, government offices e.g. the Metropolitan Police, Facebook etc
What I learned
This would enable a growing hands-on experience for us, using the security parameter of —face recognition" as face is a non-intrusive strong biometric for user identification within library management. This proposed solution is a step towards a smart library.
What's next for Library management using face recognition
we propose a smart library system, which eliminates most of this drudgery in the conventional library management systems. Using face recognition and QR code based technology, the system automates and eases the tasks of Book Issue, Book Return and Book Search. It resembles `Just walk out technology' implemented by Amazon in the Amazon Go stores. The proposed system enjoins self-issue and self-return procedures along with the dynamic search feature which provides the real-time location of the books. The proposed system significantly expedites the process of issue, return and search thus avoiding long queues at the reception counter/librarian's desk.
