🧩 About LexLens / NoticeSetu

Legal notices are often difficult to understand for ordinary people. They may contain complex legal language, important deadlines, demands, and consequences, but the first question is usually simple:

“What does this notice mean, and what do I need to do now?”

That question inspired us to build LexLens, also presented as NoticeSetu in India.

Our goal is not to replace lawyers or provide legal advice. Instead, LexLens is designed to help people understand the first 60 seconds after receiving a legal notice and organize the information they need before taking their next step.

🚀 What LexLens Does

A user can upload a legal notice as a PDF or image.

LexLens analyzes the document and converts it into a structured, easier-to-understand report containing:

  • 📄 Notice type and category
  • 👤 Sender / claimant information
  • 💰 Financial demands
  • 📅 Important dates
  • ⏰ Legal deadlines
  • 🚨 Severity / urgency
  • 📝 Recommended next actions
  • 🗂️ Missing information and evidence
  • ⚖️ Relevant legal sources
  • 📑 Legal timeline
  • 🔔 Deadline reminders
  • 📥 Temporary downloadable report
  • 👨‍⚖️ Lawyer handoff information

The current MVP supports English and Hindi.

💡 What Makes It Different

A general AI chatbot can explain text from a legal notice. We wanted to build something more structured and action-oriented.

LexLens focuses on turning a notice into a workflow:

Document → Extract Facts → Verify Legal Context → Calculate Deadline → Identify Actions → Track Evidence → Prepare Next Step

For important deadlines, the system is designed to use deterministic date calculations instead of relying only on an AI-generated date.

For example, in our Indian cheque dishonour demonstration, LexLens identifies the relevant Section 138 workflow, detects when the notice receipt date is missing, and asks the user for that information before calculating the deadline.

🔐 Privacy-Focused MVP

The current version is intentionally designed as an anonymous experience:

  • No login required
  • No signup required
  • No user account required
  • No permanent case history
  • Temporary/session-scoped analysis
  • Temporary report generation

This makes it possible for someone to quickly analyze a notice without creating an account first.

🛠️ How We Built It

The application uses a modern web architecture with:

  • Next.js
  • TypeScript
  • React
  • Tailwind CSS
  • PostgreSQL / Prisma
  • AI-powered document analysis
  • OCR and document processing
  • Rule-based deadline calculation
  • Session-scoped temporary data
  • PDF report generation

The system separates AI responsibilities from deterministic legal workflow logic wherever possible.

AI is used for tasks such as extracting and explaining information, while important workflow calculations such as deadlines are handled through application logic.

⚖️ Safety & Legal Information

LexLens is designed as a legal-information and document-understanding tool, not a substitute for a qualified lawyer.

The application displays relevant legal sources and confidence/context information where applicable. Users are encouraged to consult a qualified legal professional for decisions involving their specific circumstances.

🧠 What We Learned

Building LexLens taught us that simply adding AI to a legal document is not enough.

The more important challenge is converting unstructured information into a reliable workflow while handling:

  • Document/OCR uncertainty
  • Missing dates and facts
  • Legal deadlines
  • Jurisdiction-specific rules
  • Evidence gaps
  • AI hallucination risks
  • Privacy and temporary data handling
  • Clear communication for non-lawyers

We learned to treat AI as one component of the system rather than letting the AI control every part of the workflow.

🔮 What's Next

The current hackathon version focuses on English and Hindi and the core legal-notice workflow.

Our planned next versions can expand LexLens with:

  • 🌍 Multiple language support
  • 🔐 Optional login, signup and authentication
  • 👤 User accounts and secure case management
  • 📚 Case history and saved reports
  • 📱 WhatsApp and email-based notice intake
  • 🎙️ Voice input and voice explanations
  • 🌎 More jurisdictions and legal systems
  • ⚖️ Expanded legal document types
  • 👨‍⚖️ Improved lawyer collaboration and handoff
  • 🔔 Advanced deadline and notification management
  • 📂 Secure evidence/document organization
  • 🤖 More advanced AI-assisted legal workflows

The long-term vision is to make LexLens a privacy-conscious, multilingual legal document action platform that helps people understand what a legal notice says, what information is missing, what deadlines matter, and what they can do next.

🎯 Our Vision

ChatGPT can explain a legal notice. LexLens turns it into a verified, deadline-aware, evidence-backed action workflow.

LexLens / NoticeSetu Any legal notice. Any language. Understood in 60 seconds.
