Inspiration
I've met a few people who claim to have dyslexia, though not to a severe point as to strongly and negatively affect their lives, but still enough to be a nuisance from time to time. The idea for this web extension occurred to me when I was browsing through my dyslexic friend's social media.
What it does
The web extension's core function is to replace the text on the screen with a more dyslexic friendly alternative (Lexend or OpenDyslexic). The other function is a sentence highlighting feature for better focus when hovering over a particular phrase.
How it was built
The extension was built with aid from OpenCode using Vanilla Javascript, HTML5, and CSS. It uses Chrome Manifest MV3.
Challenges we ran into
The main issue was with the sentence highlighting feature. There were some issues in the logic that were due to some sites using custom elements. Aside from that, there weren't many major issues.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I enjoyed designing the layout and picking out the sound assets to use.
What I learned
During this project, I gained more experience on Javascript, and I got to try out Chrome's MV3 for extensions.
What's next for LexiRead
Perhaps in the future, there will be more features focused on providing a better online reading experience.
