Lexiloom: “Weaving endangered languages into the fabric of tomorrow"
The Problem: Endangered languages
Of the approximately 7,000 languages spoken today, UNESCO estimates that nearly half are at risk of extinction by the end of this century. Language carries an inherent tie with culture—when a language dies, so do hundreds, even thousands of years of unique insights, cultural heritage, and history.
Traditional language preservation methods have several limitations:
- Time/resource inefficiency: Traditional language preservation approaches often involve years of dedication from linguistic experts. This process is slow, expensive, and limited in scale. It’s estimated that a language dies every 40 days; with the traditional approach, it is impossible to catch up with the rate of language death.
- Generational gap: As the last speakers of severely endangered languages grow older, there’s isn’t an effective way to transfer undocumented language knowledge to younger generations
- Limited reach: Languages are often preserved statically in dictionaries or online archives, which are unappealing and inaccessible to potential learners. It’s not enough to just digitize a language, the younger generation needs to be given the tools to learn them and pass them on.
- Limited funding: Lack of funding for language preservation efforts limits the scale of the movement
Our Solution:
Lexiloom utilizes cutting-edge AI models to create an interactive learning platform for preserving and teaching endangered languages.
Functionalities:
- Flashcards: Lexiloom uses an AI model to generate over 4000 flashcards of key vocabulary terms
- Fill in the blank: Learners can complete sentence structures in the target language
- Reading comprehension tests: Lexiloom generates a short story and 5 corresponding questions
- Chatbot: AI assistant to support students’ learning Lexiloom doesn’t replace existing methods of language preservation—it enhances them.
