LexiLens: Simplifying Legal Documents for Immigrants
Inspiration
Navigating legal documents can be overwhelming, especially for immigrants whose first language is not English. Many of these documents contain complex legal terminology that is difficult to understand, making it a challenge for non-native speakers to correctly fill out forms. We wanted to create a solution that empowers immigrants by breaking down legal jargon and making these documents more accessible.
What It Does
LexiLens is a platform that helps users understand legal documents by:
- Allowing users to upload documents, which are stored in a personal project list for future access.
- Providing a simplified translation of the document in the user's preferred language.
- Offering an AI-powered chatbot that assists with document comprehension and answers user questions.
By simplifying complex legal documents, LexiLens gives immigrants the confidence to navigate important legal matters such as W-2s and tax forms.
How We Built It
We followed a structured approach to develop LexiLens:
- Planning & Design: We outlined the core features, designed the user interface, and mapped out API integrations.
- Development: We worked on the frontend and backend separately, ensuring a smooth user experience and efficient data processing.
- Integration & Testing: We merged the frontend and backend, fine-tuned the AI model for translation, and conducted testing to ensure accuracy and usability.
Challenges We Ran Into
- Frontend and Backend Integration: Since we had limited experience with full-stack development, integrating both components was a learning curve.
- Building AI Translation Without External Tools: Instead of relying on Google Translate or other third-party services, we developed our own AI-powered translation model, which required extensive fine-tuning.
- Debugging Technical Roadblocks: Some issues took hours to resolve, impacting our progress and morale. However, through persistence and collaboration, we overcame them.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Successfully implementing AI-powered translation without relying on external services like Google Translate.
- Creating a user-friendly platform that provides clear, accessible translations of legal documents.
- Overcoming technical challenges despite our initial lack of experience in full-stack development.

What's Next for LexiLens
- Gaining Funding & Raising Awareness: We plan to seek funding and promote LexiLens to expand its reach.
- Turning LexiLens Into an App: To improve accessibility, we aim to develop a mobile application for easier use.
- Enhancing AI Capabilities: We will continue refining our translation model to improve accuracy and efficiency.
LexiLens is just the beginning—we're excited to continue developing and expanding our platform to make legal documents more accessible for immigrants worldwide.
