Inspiration

The inspiration for LexiGuide stemmed from our desire to support students with dyslexia in overcoming writing challenges. We observed the struggles these students faced in expressing their ideas coherently and wanted to create a tool that could provide tailored assistance to help them improve their writing skills.

What it does

LexiGuide is an AI-powered assistant designed to analyze essays written by students with dyslexia. It identifies common mistakes such as spelling errors, grammar issues, and organizational difficulties, providing personalized feedback and suggestions for improvement. The tool aims to empower students with dyslexia by offering support and guidance in their writing endeavors.

How we built it

We built LexiGuide using AWS PartyRock App Creator as our development platform. We then fine-tuned the AI to generate specific reports and breakdowns of essays to ensure accurate analysis. The development process involved:

  • Utilizing AWS PartyRock App Creator for the initial development framework
  • Training the AI model to recognize patterns and errors specific to dyslexic writing
  • Designing a user-friendly interface for submitting essays and receiving feedback
  • Testing and refining the system based on feedback from users and experts in dyslexia education

Challenges we ran into

  • Data Accessibility: Obtaining a sufficient amount of high-quality data for training the AI model proved challenging due to privacy concerns and the need for diverse samples.
  • Model Accuracy: Achieving high accuracy in detecting and correcting errors posed a challenge due to the variability in dyslexic writing patterns and the complexity of language processing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully developing an AI-powered assistant tailored specifically for students with dyslexia
  • Creating a user-friendly interface that effectively supports students in submitting essays and receiving feedback
  • Receiving positive feedback from users and educators about the impact of LexiGuide on improving writing skills and confidence in students with dyslexia

What we learned

  • The unique challenges faced by students with dyslexia in the writing process and how technology can be leveraged to address these challenges
  • The importance of collaboration with educators and experts in dyslexia education to ensure the effectiveness and relevance of the tool
  • The technical intricacies of natural language processing and machine learning algorithms in analyzing and providing feedback on written text

What's next for LexiGuide

  • Expanding the capabilities of LexiGuide to include additional features such as voice-to-text functionality and support for other languages
  • Enhancing the AI model to provide more nuanced and contextually relevant feedback tailored to the individual needs of each student
  • Collaborating with schools and educational organizations to integrate LexiGuide into dyslexia support programs and curricula, reaching a wider audience of students in need of writing assistance.
