Inspiration
Lexigorium was inspired by the thrill of deckbuilding roguelikes, but reimagined through language instead of traditional deckbuilder games. We wanted to capture that same feeling of making clever builds, and adapting to unpredictable runs, while turning words themselves into the core play mechanic. The key is not to make complex words nor have knowledge of many words, but to design your build to play towards your strengths: making short words, long words, words with more consonants, more vowels, etc.
What it does
Lexigorium is a word-based roguelike where players build words from a curated deck of letters and compound chunks like TH, OU, ING, and TION. Each submitted word consumes cards from the hand, draws replacements, and scores based on card values, word length multipliers, active modifiers, and boss debuffs every 3 rounds.
The game includes:
- A campaign mode with staged progression, boss rounds, and randomized shops
- A daily challenge mode with deterministic seeds so every player gets the same run
- Modifier loadouts that create scoring synergies and utility effects
- Leaderboards powered through Reddit Devvit + Redis top see other player's scores in the daily run
How we built it
We built Lexigorium as a hybrid architecture:
- Core game logic lives in platform-agnostic TypeScript modules
- Phaser handles the interactive gameplay board, cards, animations, and drag-and-drop interactions
- React/DOM overlays handle menus, modals, HUD elements, and responsive UI
- A platform adapter layer separates browser-local behavior from Reddit Devvit behavior
- Devvit Redis is used for daily leaderboard storage and saved run validation
- This game also has a typical desktop version to run in browser (mobile devices too)
This separation let us develop fast in a normal browser while still preparing the game to run inside Reddit’s Devvit environment.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was keeping the game fully deterministic while still feeling dynamic. The deck order, shop options, daily runs, and reshuffles all had to stay seeded so the same decisions would always lead to the same results.
Another challenge was UI complexity. We wanted a tactile card experience with dragging, reordering, animated scoring, modifier tokens, and mobile support, while also fitting inside the constraints of Reddit’s embedded webview. Getting Phaser gameplay and React overlays to feel like one cohesive interface took a lot of tuning.
We also had to solve platform-specific issues around Devvit integration, leaderboard submission, Redis inspection, build publishing, and responsive layout differences between browser mode and Reddit mode.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that Lexigorium feels like more than a word puzzle. It has:
- A real deckbuilding loop instead of isolated word turns
- Modifier and utility loadouts that create emergent builds
- Daily seeded competition with leaderboard support
- A custom stage creator and shareable stage system
- A clean separation between core game logic and platform-specific code
- A playable Reddit Devvit integration on top of a fast browser development workflow
Most importantly, we turned “make words” into something that feels strategic, replayable, and expressive.
What we learned
We learned that word games can support much deeper systems than we initially expected when card draw, deck state, and modifiers are treated as first-class mechanics. We also learned the value of strong architecture early: separating game logic from rendering and platform APIs.
On the product side, we learned that presentation matters a lot for readability and feel in a strategy game. Small details like card animations, score breakdown clarity, responsive layout, and modifier visuals.
What's next for Lexigorium - A Word Rogue-Like
Next, we want to expand Lexigorium into a more complete live game experience:
- More modifiers, debuffs, upgrades for the cards in your deck, and utility systems
- More diverse bosses and stage rules
- Better onboarding and tutorials
- Cleaner live leaderboard and social sharing features inside Reddit
- Improved balancing for deck composition, rewards, and score scaling
- More custom stage tools and community-driven content
- Full polish for public Devvit launch after approval
Our long-term vision is to make Lexigorium feel like a true word roguelike platform, where daily competition, build creativity, and community-created challenges all come together.
